Even if you are not a vegetarian, you will love this book!

I got this book a few months ago and have been happily using it since. Kurma's recipes are extremely easy to follow and deliver great results every time. The book has recipes from all over the world - Italy, India, Thailand, China, Australia, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, America.

It is also divided into easy-to-access categories like rice dishes, pasta, entrees, vegetable dishes, snacks, pickles/ jams/ chutneys, desserts, etc. etc. And a small, but useful, thing: the book lays out flat on the table, so that you can keep it on your kitchen counter and read from it as you cook along!

The other thing the author shows you is how to 'spiritualize' the food you make and eat. It works. I can affirm that! I feel much more healthy and happy since I started making the recipes in Kurma's books and following the steps listed in the book to spiritualize the food that we eat.

Even if you are not a vegetarian, you will love to make (and eat) the recipes in this book. Buy it!

My wife and I use this book all the time. As I have mentioned above, the recipes are easy to use and come out tasting delicious. Kurma's other books are also very, very good. Check out his Quick Vegetarian Cards in particular, for quick and easy to make recipes.

The only vegetarian cookbook you'll ever need

I'm taking steps to ease my way into vegetarianism, and this book has been a godsend. For me, the best features of this book are the short explanation of the authors's philosophy of vegetarian cooking (keep in mind that Hare Krishna considers cooking as an act of worship), and a two page list of suggested menus for different occasions, which is really helpful for those who spends more than 20 minutes deciding what to cook for a proper three course meal. Also impressive is the glossary section, which give an explanation of the herbs and spices you might encounter in the book.
To top it off, the book is actually a good read! Clearly this book is a labour of love.
General note: if you want to take cooking a little bit more seriously, take my advice - don't buy those 30 pages recipe booklets sitting near the supermarket counters. Spend some money and get a proper recipe book - along with good kitchen tools.

A MUST HAVE IN THE KITCHEN!!

I have been a vegetarian since i was born and i LOVE cooking. I have probably had this cookbook for 10 years and have used it regularly along with three other cookbooks by Kurma. I do eat dairy (organic and with no animal hormones or any other animal ingredients) but i have never eaten any meat, fish, eggs, chicken or gelatin.
If you like to eat food that actually has taste than this cookbook is an essential for your kitchen! A lot of the time people think that vegetarian food is some tasteless tofu or a little salad.....because "WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES A VEGETARIAN EAT??" I have heard that question many times. Well we eat a variety of things and this book is a great tasting way to understanding what good vegetarian food tastes like!
The spices aren't so hard to find......mostly they will come from your local indian grocery store (which are actually quite common) or even the regular grocery store and you might spend a bit to buy most of them but they last for quite a while and you will have more freedom in deciding what you are going to cook. I would say that its a little more challenging to find the ingredients for the chinese and thai dishes just because they are much more unfamiliar but never hurts to try and it will be worth it when you get to eat! Also for those of you who don't like garlic or onions or both...Kurma offers a great alternative called hing or sometimes aesfatita (which is a yellow powder spice from india)which works great.
In addition to cooking with Kurma i would recommend Yamuna's Table although i haven't spent as much time with her recipies..... i have used them and they turn out excellent as well but require more ingredients and preperation time.
I really love the carob cake.......you might be worried that 'without eggs how can you make a cake?' but it turns out perfect every time. I have to admit that i am a chocolate lover and so i use chocolate instead of carob.....but thats the beauty of these recipies.... have fun with them...improvise a little! ENJOY! I know i am!!

Musculoskeletal Scanning: Unchartered Territory

This is a great hands-on tool. I worked side by side with another sonographer while we attempted to scan pathological joints (rotator cuffs, knees, elbows, etc.). The images in this book were great references for identifying anatomy while we scanned. It would be nice, as an addition, to have side-by-side comparisons of normal versus abnormal images of joints. This is my only complaint. Otherwise, very user friendly for both the experienced musculoskeletal scanner and for the novice.

From the Author
There are short narratives by children recounting experiences of long hospitalizations and lengthy treatments and surgeries, a memoir of an adult about the childhood experience of loss and sorrow through the death of his father, and others which chronicle the lingering effects of traumatic childhoods which have resulted in psychological problems and even psychosis. There are several accounts of troublings experiences of chronic pain. One dramatic narrative is that of a lawyer who suffers from a progressive genetic disease that has left him paralyzed. He has, however, mastered his life and is able to teach full time in a university. The book concludes with two accounts of the experience of two women who cared for dying friends.

Ultimately, this book treats of the dynamic human story of these authors as they struggle, confront, and eventually come to at least a partial understanding of what illness and loss have meant and means in their lives.

About the Author
Jeanine Young-Mason, RN,EdD,CS,FAAN is Professor, School of Nursing University of Massachusetts Amherst where she teaches psychiatric-mental health nursing, writing, consultation in advanced practice nursing and qualitative research. In all of her courses she uses art, literature, drama, film and published autobiographical narratives of psychiatric and somatic illness to help undergraduate and graduate nursing students better understand the human condition. Art, literature, and autobiographical accounts bring essential knowledge to the health care professional's education and practice, knowledge that is unobtainable in ordinary textbooks. This knowledge is, of course, a deeper understanding of suffering and its implications for health and life. It is about the valuing of that suffering and the intrinsic human need for compassion. It is also true that the arts have a power to heal through entertainment and laughter, illumination and wisdom.

I required this book for several years teaching nursing students in my chronic illness and death and dying courses. Not only do the students love it and relate to the patients' stories, they learn concepts of care grounded in these stories. A powerful and inspiring book.

Excellent Resource for Women Helping Women

This is the third edition of the Breastfeeding Atlas that I have purchased. As a new Lactation Consultant, I found it very helpful in preparing for my IBCLC Exam. The pictures and descriptions make it very helpful to learn the issues breastfeeding women can face, and how to help them manage the issues. The expression, "A picture is worth a thousand words" applies to how useful this resource is. Some are pictures we see often; others are less frequent occurrences but it is good to know that I have seen it before in, "The Atlas". I remember many times when I saw a situation in real life for the first time, I was confident in helping the mom because I had seen it before in this book. The text is very helpful, too, and many of the descriptions and recommendations have helped me tremendously in my practice. The reason why I have purchased three editions is because our field is always being updated with new information, and the new editions help keep me up to date, and prepare for not only for the next exam, but for the next mom who asks for my help.
This book would be very useful for staff at OB or Pediatrics offices or clinics, or anywhere that helps women who are breastfeeding or wish to learn more about it. In particular, midwives, doulas, physicians, LeLeche Leaders, and Lactation Consultants.

This is a "MUST HAVE" for anyone assisting families with lactation management. It is technical and understandable in its clinical definitions of photos. This new book contains all the information needed to build a highly accurate model down to the tiniest details of the hull's rivets. The book is based on the author's own remarkable 20ft model, specially commissioned for a traveling exhibition throughout North America. It contains a mass of practical information on how to construct every part of the great liner and is equally applicable to a small static bread-and-butter display model as to a large working version. It is highly illustrated with superb close-up photographs of the model, detailed drawings by the author and a large collection of photographs of the prototype herself, some of which have never been published before. In addition, the book contains a complete set of plans of the Titanic which are considered to be the most accurate yet drawn. With its mix of practical information, rare photographs and highly-detailed drawings this book will appeal to all Titanic enthusiasts as well as to ship modelers of every sort.

Of Anglo-German descent, Peter Davies-Garner trained as an architect but is now a professional ship modeler. This is his first full length book.

wonderful but

I agree that this is a WONDERFUL book. However, be aware that the "plans" on the inside cover are not enough and that on the 1:300 scale drawing, a large portion has been left out--the uniform area of the hull before the last funnel and to just before the foredeck. without a plan view, the body plan is of not so much use . There is a basic plan view on pg x that could be scaled up then you are home free.
The major pluses are the very many scale drawings or detail all to a standard based on 1:48--doubled, halved or whatever. The photos of the model are great because they provide clarity that shipboard photos do not generally.
That said, there are plans in John Bowen's book Miniature Merchant Ships and general arrangement plans in McCluskie's books (and they are also filled with great photos and clear details not to be missed. As noted, the drawings are generally of the "Olympic "class and only detail drawings are apparently available for the Titanic.
There are likely things here that are standard shipbuilding practise so the details in this book could likely be used on other H&W ships or other merchant ships of the period, especially where no detail drawings are available. For example, the stern on the Titanic is not much different from the stern and forefoot on the Bavarian of 1869--H&W yard No 68 (Titanic was Yard No 400). This suggests that where no plans exist, those of the T could likely be modified for other hulls of the same period.
This is a book not to be missed by any modeller and MR Davies-Garner has done a great service to all modellers by setting an example of the kind of work that should be standard.

A Very Detailed Book

This modestly sized handbook is a real boon for model builders or ship enthusiasts. There aren't many colour photos, but for a manual on model building the only colour photos needed for paint schemes are there. Additional photos of the finished model on display are also included. Detailed drawings of the deck spaces are shown with detailed written instructions, and rather smallish b/w photos as to how construction was pursued. I was hoping for a larger book with larger photos, but that's asking for a lot these days. One might even be able to transfer the same techniques for use in building other models, but one would have to have some detailed drawings/plans of those ships.

I'm not sure if I could ever have the time or resources to undertake a larger model, but this will help anyone with a plastic model who wants an alternative detailed painting instruction other than those with the plastic model kit. At any rate, it's interesting to see how this was done.

Must have reference for building a Titanic Model

Like many ship modelers, I have always had a fascination with the three Olympic class liners, and particularly that most famous of the three, the Titanic. Of course, many are drawn to her story and tragically short life, but I have always been fascinated by her appearance - in my estimation, she was one of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built.

Over the years, I have made a couple of attempts at capturing her in miniature, but was not satisfied the results. One core problem has been the lack of reference material. The discovery of the ship and the subsequent James Cameron film has sparked massive amounts of interest in her, and a result has been the publication of many books, plans and websites on all things Titanic. The amount of research that has been done in the last decade has finally allowed highly accurate models of this ship to be built. This book documents a very impressive feat of the model shipwrights craft, a 1/48 scale Titanic that is some 18 feet in length.

Starting with a brief summary of the prototypes story, and quickly progressing into research and building, Peter Davies-Garner has written a no nonsense documentation of the model. The author touches on every area of the build, but some more thoroughly than others - a necessary compromise to control the size no doubt, but I was left wanting more. The many photographs are really the core of the book, and the model is covered thoroughly in black and white with a central color section. If you see a high resolution scan of the cover, this is a classic case of not judging the book by it's cover - for some reason, it is a poorly reproduced digital image, whereas the photographs in the body are higher quality.

This is an important work to scholars of the Titanic. What I particularly appreciated was the author's clear differentiation of which areas are factual and which are educated conjectures. As he states, there will never be a totally accurate model of the ship built, but his must surely be the closest to that goal yet made. I highly recommend the book, and, if you are visiting Orlando, seeing the model in person.

About the Author
Alephonsion and Benson Deng and their cousin Benjamin Ajak left the Sudan in 1987, and were relocated in 2001 from the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to the United States as part of an international refugee relief program. Today, Alephonsian Deng attends San Diego City College and works in the Medical Records Department at Kaiser Permanente Hospital. He has spoken to many schools, universities, clubs and organizations about his extraordinary story in Africa and adapting to his life here in America. Benson Deng runs the computer and digital photography system at Waste Management in El Cajon, CA. Benjamin Ajak resides in San Diego and speaks full time to organizations and schools, sharing his amazing life and insights into surviving as a child of war and a newcomer to the U.S. Judy Bernstein is a mother, writer, Student Advisor for the Community Economic Development Department at San Diego State University, volunteer mentor and Chair of the Advisory Committee of the San Diego International Rescue Committee and co-founder of the IRC Lost Boys Education Fund. She speaks with her co-authors to community groups, temples, churches, and schools.

In a land where family life was everything and the most fearsome thing was a prowling hyena or lion, fire suddenly exploded from the sky. THEY POURED FIRE ON US FROM THE SKY is the vivid description of the war in southern Sudan as seen through the eyes of three little boys, Benson, Benjamin and Alephonsion - who suddenly became homeless orphans and were forced to trek across Sudan to Kenya and Ethiopia without food or water. No longer having a father to frighten away the animals or a mother to prepare food, these five-year-old boys had to figure out how to survive. In addition to the horrors brought on by nature in the form of heat, no water, no food, hunting animals, biting snakes and insects, they soon discovered that people were not very nice to boys traveling alone. Frequently their food, clothing and blankets were taken from them or they were beaten and driven away. Even their own soldiers mistreated them and they found that after surviving so much and traveling so far, they were not exactly welcome in Kenya or Ethiopia. But survive they did to come to the United States to begin life anew.

This gut-wrenching book is a real page-turner and I found myself unable to put it down, even when the stories brought tears and indescribable anger. It was a real eye-opener to read of United Nations aid gone astray as locals took the best for themselves and left the refugees starving. There were, of course, the good people who helped the refugees with food and transportation and even lost their jobs because of it. If you never believed that war could change ordinary people into selfish monsters, then this is the book for you. The book is well written, flows well, and the transitions are so smooth that sometimes I found myself going back to the beginning of the chapter to see which lost boy was telling this particular portion of the story. There were amusing sections such as when the boys were preparing to go the US and they were attempting to learn about flushing toilets. One of them didn't remember what the book instructions said and managed to flood the restroom at the airport terminal. The things we take for granted get a new life when viewed through these boys' eyes. I recommend this book for everyone in America.

It will transform you

This is a book that I was afraid would be too painful to read. Most of us will never have the experience that these 3 young men and their "brothers" have had. But it is not about pain and sorrow. It is ultimately about Hope, Family, Education and their faith in God to get them through. This is a book that will surprise you, engage you and enrage you. Thank you , Judy Bernstein and everyone who knew this story needed to be told!

Couldn't put it down

As a former NFL player, I thought I was tough. But when I read what these young boys overcame, it made me appreciate what life is really about. A friend recommended the book and after I started it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it the next morning. Their triumph over all odds is uplifting. After the tragic events of recent days, this is a must read for all to learn about the strength of the human spirit.

About the Author

Andrew Chevallier FNIMH, MCPP, is an experienced medical herbalist, healer, and author of books on botanical medicine. He is a fellow and past-president of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy. He also helped to found the BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine course at Middlesex University.

Beautifully illustrated, in-depth reference on herbal and plant based medicine

Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine by Andrew Chevallier.

First published in 1996, this well-known reference was recently updated in a new 2016 edition. The book begins with general information regarding herbal medicine including how herbal medicine developed, herbal traditions from different parts of the world, and a history of the origins of herbal medicine. It contains information about more than 550 plants including both pharmacological information as well as the lore and traditional uses of plants.
The author estimates that of the 500,000 plants on earth, about 10,000 are used medicinally on a regular basis (Chevallier 55). The book provides detailed information on those plants which have been carefully researched for safety and efficacy are used most frequently. Entries include information regarding the cultivation, natural habitat, key actions and preparations of the plant, cautions and self-help uses. The book is generously illustrated with many full color photos and illustrations. Some of the items included are common food items including, for example, thyme, nutmeg, peppermint, asparagus, and oats. Many other plants will be much less familiar. Some of the plants are commonly available and others may be quite useful but difficult to locate in some areas.
The final chapters contain information regarding the culture, harvesting, and preparation of herbal remedies, safety of herbal preparations, and an index of herbal usage by ailment.
The author, Andrew Chevallier, a practicing medical herbalist for thirty years, helped to found the program in medical herbalism at Middlesex University in London which was the first of it's kind in a European university. He is a fellow and past-president of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH), a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy, and has written extensively in the field of herbal medicine.

Definitely a must for your herbal library!

Excellent book. Gives a broad range of plants. Not an in depth kind of book, but works great for quick look ups of plants not listed in many other books. I order herbs from all over, so this helps me find what I need, then I can do further research if I choose.

Great Herbal Reference Guide

I'd heard the author was very good, but I still was a bit skeptical since many herbalism books are terrible or a little sketchy on their research. I was very happy when I opened it up and saw the level of detail in this book. It's a very good reference guide from what I can tell. I haven't poured over the pages much at this point, but honestly, it looks fantastic if you need something that covers many, many herbs and their effects on the body.
