The book contains much technical information rarely found
in other books. I wish the author treats the data he collected
in the ways consistent in other engineering text books.

A "Bible" for pump designers

A classic in the field of pump design, Stepanoff's "Centrifugal and Axial Flow Pumps" is written for the working engineer and pump designer, but is also a useful starting point for the academician.
Filled with test data and real world design examples, the book has stood the test of time: Stepanoff's treatise is virtually unchanged since the late 1940's.
It is mostly practical in its outlook, but doesn't overlook the theoretical basis for pump design. But make no mistake, even with the heavy use today of computer finite element routines and computational fluid dynamics, commercially successful pump hydraulic design is as much art and "feel", trained by test data, as it is theoretical -- a commercial pump manufacturer would go broke in a short time if he bought CFD codes, fired his pump designer, and threw away his old tests. This is exactly why Stepanoff's book is still up-to-data despite its folksy 1940's look.
After spending many years as both a pump designer and a pump user, I bought my first copy in the 1970's, wore it out, and bought the reprint by Krieger last year. If you're contemplating working seriously in this field, either as a user or a designer, "Stepanoff" should be on your shelf.

Book good for the Mechanical Engineers and Pump Designers, but not for the Civil Engineers. A lot of theoretical information in that book, but not an adequate amount of useful knowledge.

About the Author
Eve Kushner is a freelance writer in Berkeley, California. A longtime Japanophile, she started learning Japanese in 2001. When she encountered kanji in 2002, she became fascinated. She soon began spending hours in the garden with a pot of green tea and Mark Spahn and Wolfgang Hadamitzky's five-pound "Kanji Dictionary." While creating diagrams to map out the infinitely complicated system of kanji, she often laughed out loud over discoveries that filled her with joy. She started dreaming about kanji. She named her dog Kanji. Whenever she felt upset, she turned to kanji studies, which made her feel better in no time. Before long, kanji completely took over her life, even interfering with work.

There was no choice but to make the study of kanji her life's work. Now she writes about kanji full-time, trying to show that these characters can be charming, poetic, and witty, not the source of fear and loathing people often make them out to be. The "Japan Times" praised them as "informative and entertaining." In 2009, Stone Bridge Press published her "Crazy for Kanji: A Student's Guide to the Wonderful World of Japanese Characters," prompting a flurry of positive reviews and some NPR interviews. She also published an essay in the "East Bay Monthly" about kanji as her form of spirituality.

She has now begun Joy o' Kanji, a massive project to write one essay about each of the Joyo kanji (the characters used in daily life in Japan). When this project goes live (sometime in 2010), paying subscribers will be able to download these essays on PDFs. With comprehensive information about every aspect of a character, as well as photos of kanji, these essays will reveal the personalities of each kanji (that is, the character of the characters!) as nothing ever has.

Interesting yet useless.

While this book is an interesting and engrossing read to which I devoted at least an hour a day until I finished it, it was not helpful. At all. It entertained me but it did not teach me anything of import when it came to mastering any Kanji. I thought it would be a refreshing change from most Kanji books which consist solely of a long list of Kanji, their various pronunciations, and how to write them. I was wrong. The much more boring reference books actually had a structure that allowed me to learn Kanji instead of just learning a bunch of "cool" yet useless facts about a random set of Kanji chosen by the author to present her points. I will continue on my search for a book that is both an interesting read and a valuable resource. If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them.

Kanji Magic Carpet Ride!

WOW, what an innovative and remarkable book about kanji! I have had the same experiences that Eve Kushner describes in her preface in my own efforts to learn kanji. While it is true that there is no "royal road" to learning kanji, her book provides inspiration for the journey. Her enthusiasm for the subject is catching(during a trip to Japan this year, I took over 100 photos of kanji.) This book is a kanji magic carpet ride where each of the articles in the preface, introduction and 7 chapters offers an opportunity to delve a bit more into this fascinating world. I have purchased two copies of Ms Kushner's book. I gave one to a Chinese friend who hated the way he was taught kanji as a child. He loved the book. I sincerely hope that there will be a volume 2 of Crazy for Kanji!

Great for Kanji learners!

I would highly recommend this book for anyone trying to learn kanji. Not as a study guide or a way to build vocabulary, but rather as a very detailed overview of the history, structure, and conventions of kanji usage. It's a great read for anyone who is "crazy" for kanji and I think could help those who are not so crazy about learning kanji to develop a new love and appreciation or at least make the process a little more enjoyable.

The book is laid out in chapters split into small "exhibits" that can be read on their own or as part of the chapter. Very readable entertaining and engaging with games, charts, and occasional cultural side notes which make this book something fun to just flip through but also possible to study from if your so inclined.

Good concise review of math essentials

The book starts out with a diagnostic test that consists of 48 questions. It does not say to complete it in a certain amount of time, but I would recommend you allocate about 90 minutes for it. One of the biggest mistakes is solving problems without a time limit. Browsing the questions, there was a big mix (definitions, algebra, geo, graphs, etc.) The pre-test questions also appear in ascending difficulty (much like the OG). Like the OG problems/GMAT, there are answers in the problems that follow common mathematical mistakes (you can complete the work, think you have the correct answer, but a common mistake led you here and VERITAS knows it).

The subsequent sections cover the topics in the order seen in the diagnostic test. Many of the definitional issues (and shortcuts in algebra) are covered throughout the book. Each section has a post test to cover the topics covered. Draw back: explanations were not always given. The content appeared to be sufficient to figure out where the misstep/confusion resides, but that may not be true for all people. This is true across the drills and in book exercises (not consistent where explanations are given vs where explanations are not given). Explanations were given more often then not.

Strengths:
- Word translation section appears solid (as an intro. There is a later book on word problems).
- Given this is an intro book, there is a limited supply of advanced problems (later books are labeled "Advanced" or "(section name) 2")
- Lots of sidebar notes (i.e. triangles always show up). These sidebar notes supplement the section in question and provide some strategy to the topic
- Later problems in the book combine the current section with previous sections

Weaknesses:
- Sometimes steps are skipped (factoring does not show all the steps for simplification)
- Shape sections (triangle and quadrilateral section) are a bit thin as an intro
- No mention of combined shapes (a triangle or pizza slice shape embedded in a circle or semi circle)
- Could use a cheat-sheet for each reference of most common formulas/shortcuts/etc

Bottom Line: Excellent intro for the quant section. Provides a solid framework on what is needed and what areas may require additional attention.

Five Stars For What It Is

If you are like me and are several years removed from actually using high school math, this is likely a good book to start with. It is clear and concise with a few practice questions for each topic. I spent just a few hours going through the book and completing every practice problem. It helped me remember the fundamentals, which I then applied when learning the more intricate details of the GMAT.

The Math Essentials book is a great review of all of the math skills that you once knew but haven't used in a while. Going through the exercises is very helpful in getting your mind used to mental math again, and the explanations help to show you the bad habits and mistakes you've picked up over the years.

Master Autodesk Inventor 2013 - A good book

I had never opened the Autodesk Inventor application before purchasing Master Autodesk Inventor 2013. I needed a book that would work well for a complete beginner. This book is so far working great for me. I think if I had had some previous experience I would have been able to hop around the chapters but for me I started at the beginning of the book and am slowly moving forward.

I believe this is a good book for a beginner who wants to know everything about Inventor and has the patience to slowly work through the chapters. If you want to jump right into cool looking projects then this might not be the book for you.

I'm giving it 4 stars because I find it difficult to find info on certain subjects when I do want to jump forward.
