Great recipes, if you have plenty of time for cooking!

An excellent book, lots of traditional & "classics" recipes, written with much detail & care, but for serious cooks that can spend a few hours in the kitchen.

The only problem (or advantage, depends how you look at it) is that this is aimed for profesionnal cooks that have plenty of time, ingredients, and utensils in their hands. If you want to study & learn the basics of french cuisine and are ready to invest what it takes, then this is an excellent reference. But be warned that many recipes is written over 1-3 pages (very detailed step-by-step description with the politically correct - french - terms for each procedure). So a solid and generously illustrated reference if you want to learn how real restaurants cook do their trade!

If you're an amateur and would like to cook "real & serious food" at home, but don't have hours to carefully carve every piece of vegetable and create many stocks, sauces & such, then pick another book. The recipes in this one look delicious, and the book itself is great (lots of photographies, very interesting and relevant text), but I never cooked anything from this book yet (so can't comment on how these taste) simply because it seems that each recipe will take me 3 hours... and I always end up chosing something in another book that looks doable for a weekly dinner.

Maybe I'll do a coq au vin for my dad's birthday when I have a long weekend ahead? Maybe... Or when I'll retire?

Systematic and artful approach to French cuisine

The book,Cuisine Foundations Classic Recipes, is very intuitive with systematic approach to French cuisine. Very convenient with tables and measurement both in US and Metric system. This book is filled with colorful and artistic pictures of each recipe. A great reference book, well worth the money.

If you're a numerical analyst or an engineer interested in the basic theory of the finite element method, this book belongs on your shelf. If you have no interest in finite elements but enjoy well written mathematical literature, this book still belongs on your shelf. Though some sections are dated, the contents of this book remain a solid foundation for understanding the behavior of finite element techniques in theory and in practice. Furthermore, while the contents are mathematically rigorous, the authors largely avoid the theorem/lemma/proof of most mathematical books, and instead describe the analysis in an almost conversational tone. Reading Strang and Fix reminds me of reading Lanczos: the book is dense with ideas which are both mathematically and practically interesting, but the presentation is so smooth that one can almost read it as one reads a novel. --David S. About the Author
Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, of the University of Oxford, UK. His current research interests include linear algebra, wavelets and filter banks, applied mathematics, and engineering mathematics. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks and has published a monograph with George Fix titled An Analysis of the Finite Element Method. Professor Strang served as SIAM s president from 1999-2000, chaired the US National Committee on Mathematics from 2003 2004, and won the Neumann Medal of the US Association of Computational Mechanics in 2005. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Difficult but important historical book on numerical analysis for FEM

This is one of the earliest books on the mathematics of the Finite Element Method (FEM).
The book assumes that you already have knowledge of FEM. It is intended for mathematicians who need to know the numercial analysis details. I would not recommend it to non-mathematicians. You will not learn about implementation or use of FEM from this book.

Fans of Augusten Burroughs's darkly funny memoir Running with Scissors were left wondering at the end of that book what would become of young Augusten after his squalid and fascinating childhood ended. In Dry, we find that although adult Augusten is doing well professionally, earning a handsome living as an ad writer for a top New York agency, Burroughs's personal life is a disaster. His apartment is a sea of empty Dewar's bottles, he stays out all night boozing, and he dabs cologne on his tongue in an unsuccessful attempt to mask the stench of alcohol on his breath at work. When his employer insists he seek help, Burroughs ships out to Minnesota for detoxification, counseling, and amusingly told anecdotes about the use of stuffed animals in group therapy. But after a month of such treatment, he's back in Manhattan and tenuously sober. And while its one thing to lay off the sauce in rehab, Burroughs learns that it's quite another to resume your former life while avoiding the alcohol that your former life was based around. This quest to remain sober is made dramatically more difficult, and the tale more harrowing, when Burroughs begins an ill-advised romance with a crack addict. Certainly the "recovered alcoholic fighting to stay sober" tale is not new territory for a memoirist. But Burroughs's account transcends clichés: it doesn't adhere to the traditional "temptation narrowly resisted" storyline and it features, in Burroughs himself, a central character that is sympathetic even when he's neither likable nor admirable. Imagine coming home to find hundreds of empty scotch bottles and 1,452 empty beer bottles in your apartment. This is what Burroughs (Running with Scissors) encountered upon returning from Minnesota's Proud Institute (supposedly the gay alcohol rehab choice). "The truly odd part is that I really don't know how they got there," admits Burroughs in this autobiographical tale of being a prodigy with an extremely successful career in advertising and a drive to get as wasted as possible as often as possible. Burroughs's telling of the tale alternates among hilarious, pathetic, existential and hopeful. It is an earnest and cautionary tale of calamity, brimming with Sedaris-like darkly comic quips: "Making alcoholic friends is as easy as making sea monkeys." Burroughs's slight Southern accent and gentle yet glib delivery should summon empathy on the listener's part that may have been lost with another reader. From Minnesota, Burroughs returns to New York and participates in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Like James Frey in the similar yet very different book, A Million Little Pieces (see audio review, below), Burroughs believes that when rehab is over, he must walk into a bar to see if he can resist the temptation to drink. Though not a technique condoned by A.A., it certainly makes for a fascinating listening experience.

How to follow your successful my-childhood-was-so-bad-it-was-funny memoir? Why, with a then-my-alcoholism-was-so-bad-it-was-funny memoir, of course. Burroughs, who described in Running with Scissors [BKL Je 1 & 15 02] perhaps the funniest emotionally and sexually abusive family in memoir history, now tells the story of his adulthood. After infuriating his advertising coworkers by showing up at a series of meetings stinking of booze, Burroughs is sent to a recovery center for gays and lesbians in Minnesota. He sobers up, at least for a while, and begins to confront both the demons and the comic irrationality of addiction. The narrative descends into cliche-ridden recovery jargon now and again, but Burroughs openly acknowledges the triteness of it and allows us to laugh. Blessedly free from sentimentality and the predictable fall-and-rise plot of your average booze-soaked memoir, Burroughs' characters are well drawn and fresh, even when they rely on archetypes (there's a still-wet drinking buddy, for example, but he's a hilariously morbid undertaker). Burroughs again displays his talent for finding hope and hard-won laughs in the nastiest of situations. John Green

Another Great Memoir from Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs' last book (RUNNING WITH SCISSORS) chronicled his bizarre childhood, including his dysfunctional family, the even more dysfunctional family he lived with when his mother had a series of nervous breakdowns, and his relationship with a pedophile. DRY: A MEMOIR picks up about 10 years later; Burroughs has a successful career in New York advertising and is a raging alcoholic. He's in denial about his problem, so he's surprised when his co-workers stage an intervention and even more surprised when he reluctantly agrees to a 30-day rehab stint. The book follows his attempts to remain sober, deal with his past, and cope with some harmful romantic relationships.
The book often skewers the mental health system, replete with therapy-speak, AA meetings, and self-help lingo, However, Burroughs adopts a fairly benign, almost affectionate, tone toward mental health workers. Ultimately, DRY is filled with the kind of wit and attitude you've come to expect from Burroughs. I laughed out loud quite a few times, and I felt some real suspense reading to see whether he'd relapse.
Burroughs is quickly establishing himself as a quirky and talented writer. Although he may be pegged by some as a "gay author," his work is pretty universal and likely to appeal to many different audiences. I most highly recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more of his work.

You will enjoy this book IF...

You will like this book:
*If you have not read too many other of Burroughs' books (some of the life details get repetitive)
*If you appreciate a cynical outlook and a dry sense of humor
*If you can handle raw, sometimes harsh details
*If you are alright reading about gay relationships and a few intimate details
*If you are moved by an honest struggle with addiction in life and want to get a glimpse of that struggle
*If you are not looking for flowery prose, but prefer direct, easy to read material that flows and doesn't linger on any one part of his life too much.

I started to give this book 4 stars, wanted to give it 3.5 (not an option) and settled on 3. It's a good, easy read - interesting and pointed. The reason I settled on 3 instead of 4 stars is that too much cynical gets tiring even for a cynical person. It is a rather dark read with some humor in the honesty of his arrogance and pride. Definitely a 3 1/2 star book.

Hilarious and Heartrending

Augusten Burroughs is one of the most entertaining writers on the current scene. After reading his RUNNING WITH SCISSORS and accepting the fact that it was truly a memoir (ie, he really DID have that childhood!), most of us who loved that book couldn't wait to see if he would be able to maintain his particular level of genius dry humor. Well, here it is. DRY is the continued life of this amazing writer. It is one of the most hilarious books around - Burroughs candid observations written sotto voce without quotation marks could be the dialogue for the best standup comedians on any stage. And he is not kidding!
A book about alcoholism, or rather about any kind of addiction (crack cocaine, alcohol, sex, heroine, etc), is not the expected basis for a comedic book. But Burroughs takes us through blitzkrieg drunkeness, living at the bottom of the toilet, commiting to rehab, then the whole process of AA meetings and therapy and manages to make us laugh uncontrollably. His cast of characters includes his co-workers in his successful career in advertising, his pre-rehab friends, his acquaintances from his gay rehab group, his assorted roommates and quasilovers, and his real devotion to Pighead, a would-be lover now dying of AIDS. Doesn't sound funny, does it? But life has its own way of offering perspectives in bizarre focal fields and Burroughs knows just how to make it all work. His life is a fantasy trip, and a dangerous one at that, but through all his highs and lows he keeps us on his side, and we willingly laugh and cry right along with him. This is a superb second book. Read them both - and then take a little time for introspection about how we all interact, knee deep in our foibles.

Fantastic introduction to making truffles

Pros: Fabulous recipes - which are easy to half when you don't need six dozen truffles. Clear, easy to follow directions. Fantastic photography. This book gives the home cook the "I can do this" feel in a clear and comfortable way. All of the truffle cream recipes I've tried have been fantastic. Good cursory overview of different chocolate types. Plus, Marzipan!

Cons: A little light on information about the different types of chocolate, and the variances in working with them. The boiled sugar recipes don't mention the absolute sheer danger of doing some of them. For instance, those are not recipes where children should be allowed to help.

Other reviewers have said that her tempering information was insufficient, but I've been able to successfully manage my batches using her techniques. That said, I'm doing very small batches, usually half of a recipe, which may have something to do with how easy it is for me to keep the chocolate in temper while I'm working with it.

I've not made any of the cluster or caramel recipes, since I've got braces on, and braces and sticky candies are never a good mix. However, once they come off, some of those recipes are on my "must have NOW" list.

All in all, I think this book is a must have for the amateur confectioner.

This is a graduate level textbook on measure theory and probability theory. The book can be used as a text for a two semester sequence of courses in measure theory and probability theory, with an option to include supplemental material on stochastic processes and special topics. It is intended primarily for first year Ph.D. students in mathematics and statistics although mathematically advanced students from engineering and economics would also find the book useful. Prerequisites are kept to the minimal level of an understanding of basic real analysis concepts such as limits, continuity, differentiability, Riemann integration, and convergence of sequences and series. A review of this material is included in the appendix.

The book starts with an informal introduction that provides some heuristics into the abstract concepts of measure and integration theory, which are then rigorously developed. The first part of the book can be used for a standard real analysis course for both mathematics and statistics Ph.D. students as it provides full coverage of topics such as the construction of Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures on real line and Euclidean spaces, the basic convergence theorems, L^p spaces, signed measures, Radon-Nikodym theorem, Lebesgue's decomposition theorem and the fundamental theorem of Lebesgue integration on R, product spaces and product measures, and Fubini-Tonelli theorems. It also provides an elementary introduction to Banach and Hilbert spaces, convolutions, Fourier series and Fourier and Plancherel transforms. Thus part I would be particularly useful for students in a typical Statistics Ph.D. program if a separate course on real analysis is not a standard requirement.

Part II (chapters 6-13) provides full coverage of standard graduate level probability theory. It starts with Kolmogorov's probability model and Kolmogorov's existence theorem. It then treats thoroughly the laws of large numbers including renewal theory and ergodic theorems with applications and then weak convergence of probability distributions, characteristic functions, the Levy-Cramer continuity theorem and the central limit theorem as well as stable laws. It ends with conditional expectations and conditional probability, and an introduction to the theory of discrete time martingales.

Part III (chapters 14-18) provides a modest coverage of discrete time Markov chains with countable and general state spaces, MCMC, continuous time discrete space jump Markov processes, Brownian motion, mixing sequences, bootstrap methods, and branching processes. It could be used for a topics/seminar course or as an introduction to stochastic processes.

Krishna B. Athreya is a professor at the departments of mathematics and statistics and a Distinguished Professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Iowa State University. He has been a faculty member at University of Wisconsin, Madison; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Cornell University; and has held visiting appointments in Scandinavia and Australia. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics USA; a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; an elected member of the International Statistical Institute; and serves on the editorial board of several journals in probability and statistics. Soumendra N. Lahiri is a professor at the department of statistics at the Iowa State University. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

Good Book But ...

This is a good book. And the authors try to summary the measure theory and probability theory into one book. Benefit of doing this is easy to see relationship between the two theories more clearly than reading one for each topic. However, I should say that no book trying to do this job is successful, including this one. To my experience, better understand of real analysis is necessary. If you do not, I think this book is not suitable for you. If you do, you can start the book from chapter 6 and treat the 1-5 chapter as a good reference.

Moreover, the statements in this book are quite concise and I like this style. However, this is a quite new one. There are pretty much typos in the book. I expect that the second edition will be much better than this one.

Another Excellent Probability Theory Book

There are many choices to make when studying graduate probability theory. There are the classics such as Billingsley, Shiryaev, and Dudley which belong in everyone's library. However, this recently renewed volume by Athreya and Lahiri can be a very useful alternative.

Measure, Integration, Product Spaces, Limit Laws, and so on are all covered in the early chapters. However, Characteristic Functions are covered particularly well, and many useful results can be found here. Discrete parameter Martingales are particularly well done, and well crafted proofs of results such as the Vitali theorem are available for reference.

Some of the advanced topics include the Markov Chain Monte Carlo for simulation enthusiasts, a chapter on Brownian motion ending with option pricing is included for those in finance, and a chapter on the bootstrap is also included for further reference. Surprisingly, the Galton-Watson branching process is actually the last topic in the book, but it is treated in the context of martingales.

This is another excellent Springer Statistics Text, by two leading probability theorists. I recommend it to all. Please note that as of 2010 this volume is only available in paperback.

Graduate Measure Theory with Statistical Applications

This is an excellent graduate level book on Measure and Probability Theory! The book to me seems student friendly! Of course measure theory is not an easy subject and you will never find an easy book on the subject. Some how I find myself flipping through the pages of this book many times during my times of boredom. I don't know how to do all the problems in the book, but I would love to learn how to. This book is one of the best books in my eyes on Advanced Probability. I recommend it to any professor to use for their courses in measure theoretic probability.

Using a false identity, Alex enters the school and soon finds himself surrounded by curiously docile students, teachers who support the fascism, and a renegade doctor interested in cloning. Barenreiter edition: The Best!

Musicians prefer this version above others since it is known for accuracy and faithful representation of composer's scored ideas.

Another bonus is the paper used: doesn't fade, wear under constant use, extremely durable.

Binding is also durable and stands up to repeated use.

The cost is reasonable and a worthy 'investment'.
