Allison Rossett is a professor of educational technology at San Diego State University and a consultant in workforce learning and performance and technology-based systems. She is the author of the best-selling Handbook of Job Aids (Pfeiffer) and Beyond the Podium (Pfeiffer), both of which are winners of the International Society for Performance Improvement's Instructional Communications award.

This book works!

I read "First Things Fast, 2nd edition" on the plane, while traveling to see a new client for a week of analysis for a large e-learning initative. The client asked me to spend my time before the meeting going through mountains of content, and I did a lot of that... But the most important preparation I did was reread this book. "First Things Fast" provides sample questions and checklists for tackling performance analysis quickly. It organizes these tools into specific types of projects, such as a new system rollout, a performance problem, people development and more. Reading this book kept me focused on the goal of our analysis, which was to identify needs and solutions that would fill the gap. This book promotes using data to help make decisions and set priorities. On this recent project, the data helped paint a clear picture on where to put our energy. The book works. I suggest you reread it at the time of need. It definitely helps make analysis efforts more productive.

If you are looking for a companion to take along on your spiritual journey, you couldn't pick a better one than Fr. James Martin, S.J. His new book is a marvel. It is clear and concise about all those troubling questions you always wanted to ask about God and finding God. It offers a map (thoughtfully provided by St. Ignatius of Loyola and built on by Fr. James) for seeing God in your life and putting into practice this wisdom. This includes simplifying your life, confronting the nature of suffering, how Ignatian spirituality helps with making decisions, how to become the person you were created to be, and more. I especially liked the part on role of desire--our hearts' deepest longings--and how they bring us closer to God. Add in Fr. James's flashes of incisive humor as well as various accounts from his personal journey, and you have a fine book.
If I had one word to apply to this book (I considered "inspiring," "educating," "enlightening," and "transforming") it would be clarity. We are in great need of a clear thinker as we ponder together the nature of our humanity and who we are called to be while alive on this earth.

A readable religious book that still makes you think.

Religious, and specifically Christian, books can be a challenging lot. On the one hand there are plenty of great theological texts to read (Augustine, Aquinas, Calvin, Rahner, Barth, etc), but suffice it to say they are not the type of book you curl up with at the end of the day. On the other hand, there are too many "Christian-lite" books (I'll be nice and not name names) which touch on Christian themes, but lack the depth to really challenge the faithful.

With his rather bold title, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, James Martin, SJ looks like he would fall in the latter category. But happily, what we find here is a treatment of the Christian faith (through a Jesuit lens) which is not difficult to digest, but will challenge the reader to reexamine their stance toward faith. This is not just wordplay when I say "stance toward faith." Martin honestly and respectfully engages readers who may be atheists or agnostics, as well as any Christian still examining their faith. He does note that much of what he offers from his Jesuit life could be adopted by non-Christians. But give Martin credit for not being embarrassed of his faith and making a strong case for Christianity.

Martin acknowledges his own wordplay when he addresses his title. "It's not a guide to understanding everything about everything (thus the Almost). Rather, it's a guide to discovering how God can be found in every dimension of your life." The essence of the book is that every aspect of your life is spiritual -- faith is not just concerned with your thoughts on God, but what you say in those emails to a coworker. This is the first of four definitions that comes from Jesuit spirituality, namely, that everything in your life is important. The second idea is "contemplative in action," in which Martin outlines how a contemplative life translates into an active life. This theme plays a major role throughout the book as Martin explores how those of us who are not Jesuits can still actively incorporate spirituality into our lives. Third, not only is everything important, but God can be found everywhere. This carries the theological phrase of incarnational spirituality, but the idea is simple. Finally, many readers may be surprised to hear that people who pledge obedience see their spiritual life as one of freedom and detachment from distracting influences as opposed to a set of rules to follow.

Martin spends a great deal of time looking at the role of prayer in our lives. Again he is not afraid to challenge, as he does with the conventional excuse of "busyness," when it comes to why we find prayer challenging. One of Martin's strengths is that he understands the challenges of the working world. He came to his own faith decisions after a, ahem, active collegiate experience and after having a successful business career. He knows what many people deal with daily, and although not the head of a family, he understands the stresses the life of a parent has to contend with in addition to finding prayer time. But he points out that all relationships need nurturing, and our relationship with God is no different.

He offers several options, but his focus on "The Examen" is the most enlightening. This Jesuit prayer is central to the Jesuit way of life. Created by the Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius Loyola (and Jesuit spirituality is often called Ignatian spirituality), this prayer takes a person through five steps at the end of the day. The prayer focuses on the course of the day. In Martin's version (and we learn throughout that Jesuits are a pretty flexible lot on faith issues) we start with gratitude for what went well, and then review all actions of the day. When we recall events we are sorry for we have reached the third step, which leads naturally to seeking forgiveness, step four. Finally, we seek God's grace for the coming day.

Simple as it sounds, and it is simple, the prayer reinforces that idea of all aspects of your life are important to God. All our actions should reflect our faith, and when we fail, we should seek to remedy our wrongs. Regardless of one's faith inclination, a thorough review of the day and an accounting for one's actions is bound to create opportunities to move forward.
Martin's explanations of the vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty are enlightening in not only understanding what those vows mean, but what they have to do with the rest of us. No, he is not promoting worldwide chastity in the normal sense, but he does argue that loving chastely lets those even in sexual relationships realize there are many ways to express love. In a sex-obsessed culture, this rather obvious line of thinking is desperately needed.

This is how Martin works throughout the book. He explains how Jesuit's think and why, and then looks to tie it in with everyday life for the non-Jesuits of the world. While it sounds simple, it is challenging in both content and translation to life. If you just want an easy "feel good" book or "10 steps to live like a Jesuit," look elsewhere. If you want to think about faith and how it underlies your life, this is the place to start. But not to worry, Martin does all this with a sense of humor. He knows when some thinking sounds funny, and he points it out. He loves to tell Jesuit jokes, almost always at the expense of Jesuits, and the book is filled with real-life stories to illustrate his points. How often do you get to read a priest talk about being overwhelmed by sexual obsession just weeks before ordination? Martin does, and he spares himself little in the telling of tales. But his honesty and humor make all this thinking that more fun. And after all, if we cannot enjoy our faith, we must be missing something.

Outstanding guide to a more fulfilling life

The "Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything" is the third book I've read by Fr. Martin. His writing is very down to earth and interjected with his own personal experiences throughout. Fr. Martin takes the reader on a journey through Jesuit history that entertains and enlightens. The main subject matter of the book encourages readers to discover their own spirituality via the guidelines established by St Ignatius Loyola nearly 500 years ago. However I would describe Fr Martin's read with one word, "personal". The topics covered in the book seem as though they are directed specifically at me. Feelings of unfulfillment, my unrelenting drive for success, and a search for direction in my life are all things that seem to plaque me as I approach the midlife mark. Fr Martin seems to address all of these feelings and gives some really good advise on how to work through some of these difficult feelings. Fr. Martin is a Catholic priest and I would never dream of saying that the book isn't about building a personal relationship with God, but the book really helps the reader discover themselves. It's as much a self-help book as it is a religious subject book. I can honestly say that some of the guidelines established by the founding Jesuits some 500 years ago as described and explained by Fr. Martin have helped me more to discover the person that I am supposed to be than anything else I have ever tried. Whether you're religious or not, this book has so much to offer a reader struggling to overcome the anxiety of living in today's chaotic world and leading you down the path to self-discovery.

The HVAC-R purchase I made was extremely useful in the diagnosis of electrical problems related to HVAC unit troubleshooting. The condition was very good and we intend to use this book for many years. Newer versions will be purchased as new units are designed and implemented. About the Author
Christian Ekberg is a full professor in Industrial Materials Recycling (since 2007) as well as a full professor in Nuclear Chemistry (since 2012) at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden. He is also an elected member of the Royal Swedish Academy for Engineering Sciences. The main research focus on the last 25 years has been solution chemistry of the lightest to the heaviest elements in the periodic table (thermodynamics, solvent extraction etc) as well as statistical uncertainty analysis. In later years the focus has started to include recycling processes from various sources as well as the new Gen IV nuclear reactor systems. He has published more than 120 reviewed scientific papers.

Good updated version!

The new and updated version of the Radiochemistry book is a well structured and comprehensive book, good for grasping the fundaments of nuclear chemistry!
In it's new format, the text is much easier to read, the figures easier to use and some correction to previous pictures offer a much better understanding of the concepts.
Also, the rearrangement of chapters makes more sense and is easier to follow.
The cover picture is a really eye catcher, good job with that! :)

Great read for those interested in learning about plant medicine.

I am studying medicinal aromatherapy and this book was a great place for me to start. Its about learning how to listen to the Plants and Trees, and allowing them to guide us back to a place of intuition and Divine Love. The Plant Kingdom holds so much wisdom, and some of that is revealed through this book. The first half contains higher spiritual truths and stories of the Author's experience working with the essences. The second half of the book dedicated to explaining a handful of powerful medicinal essences.

Barry Kapp is my mentor who taught and certified me in Medicinal Aromatherapy. His book, Wisdom of the Earth Speaks the Truth About Medicinal Aromatherapy, contains the "essence" of his convincing beliefs about the Plant and Tree Kingdoms. About the Author
BRADFORD SCHMIDT AND BRANDON THOMPSON are founding members of GoPro’s media department. Bradford first met  GoPro founder Nicholas Woodman in 2002, on a wooden chicken ferry while on a surf trip in Sumatra. The two bonded through their love of surfing, travel, and photography. Over the next seven years, Bradford helped Nick develop what would become GoPro, testing prototype mounts and cameras and filming footage for sales, marketing, and trade shows. In 2009, Bradford moved to Half Moon Bay, California, to create GoPro’s media department and start its YouTube channel. Soon after, Brandon joined him as the second member of the media department. Since then, the two have worked together to tell countless GoPro stories; in the process, helping GoPro become the content-driven brand it is today.

Value Packed Guide - A must have

When I first saw that GoPro was coming out with a filmmaking guide book, I immediately wondered if it would be worth the $20+ Amazon had it priced at. The answer to that question is yes, absolutely.

The book is organized into a few major sections:

1. Forward, Preface, and History of GoPro:
These sections are interesting if you want to hear some of the story and inspiration for GoPro cameras. I enjoyed this section, though some people might want to skip it and head straight into the meat of the book.

2.. GoPro Primer:
This section is where you learn about the basics of using the cameras. What resolution should you use? What mode should you use? How should you adjust the camera settings for the optimum picture/video quality? All these questions and more are answered in this section. I think this is one of the most useful sections in the entire book and one worth revisiting often.

3. Mounts:
This section covers some of the basic mounts that you will want or need for getting point of views. Most of the mounts covered in this section can easily be researched just by searching on Amazon or Youtube. However, the book does include a section on experimental mounts. The experimental mount section will definitely be more useful for those who are more experienced GoPro users. This section also covers "film-maker" toys like drones and gimbals. The information is by no means extensive but because of the general layout of the book, which includes links to videos, this section could prove to be very inspirational. Lastly, there is a section that covers Multi-Camera set ups like Dual and 3D as well as array and spherical.

4. Angles by Activity:
The function of this section is to provide a quick reference guide. If you plan to use your GoPro for a lot of different activities you will especially like this section since it guides you on what mounts and corresponding camera modes are best for capturing a specific activity.

5. Capturing a Story:
This section is simply awesome. The authors tell you how to prepare to tell a story with your video. This is one of the things that makes GoPro cameras unique. You have to plan out what you want to record and how you want to tell your story. This section provides an excellent guide on how to do that. It also has a list of "essentials" that the GoPro production staff always take with them when they go out to capture a story. This list is particularly useful as a guide to what you "go bag" should eventually have.

6. Art of Editing:
Editing is what makes GoPro videos particularly awesome. If you haven't figured out by now that you will have to do some video editing to produce epic videos, let this be your memo! Editing is a huge part of the creative process. During this section they cover everything from organizing to time manipulation (slow motion, fast motion, etc.)

7. Story Analysis:
This section is all about the story. They give you examples of how GoPro uses all the tools at its disposal to tell a story. Its a theoretical section in the sense that it is breaking down videos into sections and how they contribute to the videos as a whole, what type of video it is, and examples of well made videos. It tells you how to tell a kind of story.

8. Share your world:
This section is all about inspiration. It tells you how you can share your own content, how to get access to more content, how to export your content, forums, and epic people you should be following for more inspiration.

Overall, this book provides a wealth of information in terms of the scope of what is covered. It doesn't go into great depth on any particular section, though I think that if it did, it would take away from the book. This book is meant to give you a good idea of where to start, then you just gotta get out there and try stuff. Even professionals may find this book extremely useful, if for the inspiration alone. The book is loaded with amazing pictures. Almost every single page has a QR Code/link you can follow to view a youtube video of an example of whatever it is they are talking about in that page. Its packed with visual content. Also, every picture in the book has a description of what camera settings and mount were used to capture it. The only thing I don't like about the book is that some pages don't have a page number, which can be a little annoying as you're trying to find a particular section. That is really the only complaint I have.

I plan to come back and edit this review to include additional information as I read and become more familiar with the book. It is so much information it might take a while, but at least you now have an idea of what content the book has. Definitely get this book if you're a newbie looking for inspiration and more know-how. It will make the learning curve a lot faster.

This is a nice book that reads well, is written well and looks great. The book is not what I expected or wanted. It really is a high level book focused on the concepts and theories of GoPro film making. It is not a detailed instruction manual on GoPro software or hardware. A lot of it is a historical review of GoPro. Interesting and well done but I wanted the how to nitty gritty.

This book was a gift for my son. He posts his outdoor activity videos on You Tube, (fishing, kayaking, snowboarding, mountain biking, etc.). He has been using a GoPro for quite some time. He really liked this book. It is dog-eared, and the cover is bent from use. I find it laying around the house in odd places, like he carries it around with him. When asked he said it is a good book. Coming from him is like someone else jumping up and down and screaming, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I notice his videos look a lot more complex and sophisticated now, and believe that tips he found in this book are the reason
So, I'd say that GoPro users would find a lot of useful information in this book, though I have not personally read it myself.

Great book, easy to follow and implement

This is a great book! I purchased it on a whim about a year ago and have found it extremely useful. It's very well illustrated, easy to reference, has great photos, and I like how they explain both the healing properties of the crystals and how to use them in daily life. You can look up info on individual crystals/gemstones, by type of healing needed, by astrological sign, placement types for healings (e.g. to wear it vs. place next to bed), etc. All the examples are very current and can be applied immediately to any situation. Every time I read it I find more to enjoy about it and learn. Before this book I wasn't that in to crystals, but its been so easy to get in to that I find myself more and more intrigued with the depth of the knowledge this book offers. I would definitely recommend it!

Good beginner book

I find the Crystal User's Handbook to be more of an introductory book to crystals and their uses. It was one of the first crystal books I purchased when I became interested in the uses and properties of crystals.
Overall the book is divided up into sections, crystals for stress relief, relaxation, physical well-being, immune system, etc. In each section there is a basic list of stones/crystals that would be helpful.
I did find interesting in the Physical Well-Being section, it shows on figures which areas are most commonly affected due to your Zodiac sign.
The book also has a brief introduction to the chakras, and states what each chakra does or represents.
There are also sections that state which crystals help with your home, workplace, love, and protection. Also a nice little section about the different ways one can cleanse and care for their crystals.
Lastly there is a section about which crystals are beneficial to a persons' zodiac sign, a basic directory for crystals and what ailments they help, and lastly a brief Gemstone and Crystal directory.
If you are wanting a book that goes more into what exactly each crystal and gemstone are I would not recommend this book. If you are wanting a book that starts you off into learning about working with crystals and gemstones; what they can be used for, how to care for them, etc. then this book is a great start.

a friend of mine had this book. that is why i knew i wanted it. it is a great book. it talks about crystal energies,meaning,scrying. it also touches on your aura and your chakras.lots and lots of pictures

Best Book for Written information on ALL Aspects of Dying

I see other reviewers have given 4 stars for the lack of color photos. I can understand that but feel that the information in this one book is so complete and well done that it can only get 5 stars from me. Being new to dying I have been collecting and reading everything available to me on the subject. This is the first out of about 20 books so far that I sat down and read for hours feeling I was getting the complete picture from how your pots and pans can act as mordants to a well done selection of plant information, collecting and best uses of all parts. Color photographs would be lovely but there is a vast technical side to dying and I for one am very appreciative of a book that is so detailed on the subject and will become my go to book for information. Worth every penny!!

Technical Tome

Loads and loads of information -all in print. The only pictures were on the cover. Information is technical and makes use of the nasties - tin, chrome and copper. It should have been named "Science of the Dyer." If you want to identify anything then you will need more books as this one refers one only to other sources for identification. Good reference book for the technical aspect of dyeing. Dyeing is all about color and this book misses out on that aspect.
