About the Author
 Gavin Aung Than is a freelance cartoonist based in Melbourne, Australia. After working in the corporate graphic design industry for 8 years he quit his unfulfilling job at the end of 2011 to focus on his true passion, drawing cartoons. Gavin launched Zen Pencils at the start of 2012, a cartoon blog which adapts inspirational quotes into comic stories, and hasn't looked back since.

Great Stories and Great Illustrations

Skillful cartoonist Gavin Aung Than adapts inspirational writings of a wide variety of people into cartoon vignettes in this collection of his comics. The writings come from Isaac Asimov to Sir Ken Robinson, from The Dalai Lama to William Shakespeare. For each of the stories, Than subtly shifts his drawing style to match the theme as well as the setting.

His poignant depiction of Albert Camus's love story in 'The Middle of Winter' contrasts with persistent effort of George Mallory in 'Because It's There'. Percy Shelley's famous poem 'Ozymandias' leaps out of the page as does Kahlil Gibran's 'Work is Love Made Visible'. With each story, Than rapidly draws us into each world, and breathes life into the text with his original drawings. Than is able to entertain while at the same time reinforcing the messages from the authors.

The themes of many of these episodes overlap and blend with Than's autobiographical stories. They call upon us to be true to our own nature, to set out on our own and to make a difference in the world.

I'm so grateful to Gavin Aung Than for creating his astonishing website Zen Pencils. It's become a profoundly positive refuge in a world that too often tries to pound you down (especially if you are creative). Gavin's artwork and amazing storytelling skills bring a deeper meaning to some of the most notable quotes of the past few decades (and centuries). His work has inspired me to get back to writing. Dream the Impossible Dream is the second in his series of books featuring artwork from Zen Pencils. It includes a pull-out poster and a new 16-page comic. Both of his books sit prominently on my desk so that I can remind myself that to dream is good, but to do is so much better.

I'm willing to bet that if you need some inspiration in your life or if you just like positive messages and cool

Gavin's work really touches my soul in a way that few other things do. Though I can't predict exactly how you will feel about it, I'm willing to bet that if you need some inspiration in your life or if you just like positive messages and cool, sometimes quirky drawings you will LOVE this book.

I really like that his work touches on such a wide variety of situations like dealing with the frustrations of a dead-end job, trying to lose weight/get in shape, staying persistent in the face of adversity, the ups and downs of romantic relationships, finding and staying true to your self as a person and your passions.

I have 11 of his posters in my classroom and sometimes I tell my students to go read a particular one when they're stuck on a problem or feeling frustrated or lost. They seem to enjoy them and take heart and that makes me glad.

This book and it's predecessor may not be the solution to all of your life's challenges (or maybe they are, lol!) but they'll certainly give you some inspiration to get a start or keep at whatever it is you need to do to get where you want to be.

This book has several forerunners in which the author, A.A. Ungar, develops
novel tools and techniques to study Analytic Hyperbolic Geometry in a way guided
by analogies with tools and techniques to study Analytic Euclidean Geometry. In
fact, Ungar’s novel tools and techniques result from the adaptation of well-known
tools and techniques in Euclidean geometry for use in hyperbolic geometry. Specifically,
(1) Cartesian coordinates, (2) barycentric coordinates, (3) trigonometry, and
(4) vector algebra, commonly used in the study of Euclidean geometry, are adapted
for use in hyperbolic geometry as well. The use of these tools and techniques enables
for the first time several important theorems in Euclidean geometry to be translated
into their hyperbolic counterparts. Specifically, the book presents the translation
into hyperbolic geometry of the following well-known theorems in Euclidean geometry:
(1) the Inscribed Angle Theorem, (2) the Tangent-Secant Theorem, (3) the
Intersecting Secants Theorem, and (4) the Intersecting Chords Theorem. Moreover,
in the study of Euclidean geometry in higher dimensions one commonly assigns a
so called Cayley-Menger matrix to each simplex. In full analogy, the author assigns
in the book a gamma matrix to each hyperbolic simplex, enabling novel results in
higher-dimensional hyperbolic geometry to be discovered. I strongly recommend
the book for all students and researchers who are interested in the study of hyperbolic
geometry by means of novel tools and techniques. Moreover, I strongly
recommend the book for everyone who loves elegant algebra and who is familiar
with the basic elements of vector space approach to Euclidean geometry.

Essential!

I am a soon to graduate 4th year in medical school who just completed a month long radiology course. I got this book on a whim since I thought I was not learning enough. This book definitely taught me more than the whole month of staring at people read images. If you are looking for something that will teach you all the PRACTICAL basics that an INTERN will NEED to know when having to make a decision at 2am without the help of a radiologist, then look no further. This is the book for you. I have been telling all of my friends about it. It is a must-read.

They do a great job explaining what exactly you're supposed to be looking for. I used the access code, and the website has a lot of great resources as well (quizzes, e-book, etc). I also like the compact size. Great reference tool!

Excellent Book for All, definitely recommend getting it as a 3rd year!!

I got this book while rotating through my radiology 4th year elective, and I have to say it is truly well written book that would benefit both radiologists and non-radiologist alike. It allows you to get a better grasp at reading images and better understand it as well; and definitely a good skill to develop to prepare yourself for your intern year. Personally, I wish I had know about this book as a 3rd year med student since it would have been an invaluable resource going through internal medicine and surgery clinical rotations. And as I mentioned earlier, it’s a good reference for your intern year and even for individuals pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine as well, as you definitely do a lot of imaging studies. The supplemental web materials and quizzes are a good way to test your knowledge as well.
