Bob Umlas is an Excel maven who has been awarded the title of Microsoft Excel MVP in recognition of his ongoing contributions to various online news groups. He is the author of This Isn’t Excel, It’s Magic and a contributing editor to Inside Microsoft Excel who has written more than 300 articles on all aspects of the program. He was a coleader of New York City’s PC Excel Special Interest Group for more than a decade. He lives in Palisades, New York.

Teaches powerful and elegant techniques

This is one of the most useful Excel books I have read. The author did a fantastic job in demonstrating unique solutions to common Excel challenges.
While there were many useful tips, two were especially helpful which I utilize in everyday use of Excel:
* Overriding cell formulas. The use of a relative reference in a defined name is brilliant. Previously, I allowed overrides by writing cumbersome VBA code to restore the original formula and unprotecting everything to modify formulas, but the tip demonstrated in this book is so much more elegant and efficient.
* The topic on trimming worksheet cells on large blocks of cells. This was worth the price of the book in my opinion. I had downloaded some Excel utilities that had code to trim cells on a worksheet. The code was written the "typical" way as described in the book. It performed adequately on smaller numbers of cells, but got overwhelmed on large blocks. I knew that cells could be read into an array and that an array could be written to a block of cells, but I would have never thought to process data in an array as demonstrated here. What used to take minutes trimming cells individually now takes seconds using the techniques presented.

Yes, those impossible challenges CAN be solved in Excel!

If an Excel workbook were a chemist's laboratory, Bob Umlas is the scientist whose pushing-the-envelope discoveries you'll want to know about, and to keep in your Excel's arsenal of "Wow Solutions".

Not so great

Already know a lot of this stuff. Don't especially like the format. It's a little rinky dink and thus not that easy to follow. They should take the the font size down and try to get more info on a page. But then they wouldn't have a book. The ideas are OK, but in my opinion, stick with Bill Jelen or John Walkenbach.
