About the Author
Jason E. Portnof, DMD, MD is a full time faculty member at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Beth Israel Medical Center/ Jacobi Medical Center/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Dentistry and Otorhinolaryngology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Portnof completed his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his doctorate in dental medicine (DMD) from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His medical school training (MD) was completed at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Portnof completed a fellowship in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/ craniomaxillofacial surgery in the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.
Tim Leung, DMD, MHSc, MD is a private practice oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and New York, NY. He is also a faculty member of the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at Jacobi Medical Center Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Bronx, NY). Dr. Leung completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He received an MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and a DMD from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He earned a MHSc from the University of Toronto. His undergraduate education (BA) was completed at Cornell University.
Melvyn S. Yeoh, DMD, MD is Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. He completed an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Yeoh earned his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Cornell University. His undergraduate education was at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California.

I'm certain a 3rd grader wrote this

I bought this book to study for my part two boards along with the dental decks, and the Mosby's review. I made it through the other two study materials without finding any errors and it really helped me study. I didn't make it far until I started noting errors in this book. The answer described would imply B is the correct answer but the answer page said it was C, misspellings, questions that really don't matter, and then I got to page 27 and found the following sentence.
"After being presented with many treatment options including rockets power dancers (RPD)... etc."
SERIOUSLY?!?! RPD stands for rockets power dancers? I threw this book at the wall and went back to studying old released questions that might actually help me. That's right, I made it through 10% of this book before realizing how terrible this book is and I'm kind of embarrassed it took me that long. Do NOT waste your money on this book. You are better off using this money to pay a 5th grader to tell you what is on the test than to waste time reading this.

This is a very bad Q and A book. The questions are way to easy. I mean so easy you dont need to review anyting to get most of these questions correct. The real board is nothing like this. I am licensed in Canada, USA, and Mexico and I have taken all their exams and the questions in this book are no where near the real questions. Its like the wrote this book for dental assistants or something. There are better review material out there, and your best bet is to get old released exams from the ADA. If there is a specific topic that you are really having issues with then get Q and A book on that topic. Those books exist but may be diificult to find but not impossible, you just have to search abroad. This book will not help. The questions are too easy and if you can finish the book in one day with out having reviewed any topics and get a majoroty of the questions correct.

Useless. Not Reflective of Test.

I used as many materials as I could get my hands on to study for NBDE Part II. This was by far the worst. The questions in this review are completely out of touch with anything that you will see on the exam. In this book you will see the authors' bizzarre obsessions with hobby topics that are not really emphasized in dental education or NBDE II. In some cases, the questions or explanations are plain wrong. I would not recommend this book in its current edition.

Reluctant Hero

Okay, I am really found of the old, old Harlequin Romances because they had very little if any strong sexual content, but a lot of times I had to trade off for abusive, mean, cold and sometimes hard men. Most of the times naive young women and often it made me a bit puzzled as to why the female lead character was attracted to the male lead character.
So I really like Helen Brooks, and I have all the books she has published in the US, except Dance Sonata, so I am rereading them so I can give a review to them.
So here goes; Enrico Meliora was the exact copy of a stone angel Tania Miles had seen, and he had the countenance of that statue.
Tania met him as she was coming home on her bike, from an interview that went over the time she had allotted to get home before dark, and the interviewer was so inapt that she knew she wouldn't get the job anyway. But going home in semi darkness, she was run off the road by a car trying to pass Enrico's on a blind turn, that wracked her bike. By the way we never heard anything else about the bike after she got her job with Enrico as help to his children's nanny Gilda, and sometimes secretary to him.
Enrico's eyes were black in one chapter, and brown in the next for the first five chapters of the book, as Tania's hair when from deep chestnut red, to tawny.
Enrico had been widowed for two years, his wife had died giving birth to his son Emmanuele, and he already had a little girl Louisa.
His late wife Catalina had love him beyond all bounds and he never felt that way about her, Enrico blamed himself for her death, but he liked to say as quoited on the back of the book, "The female sex is not capable of deep emotion!" Yet his wife proved him wrong, but he conveniently ignored that. In fact he was the one that seemed to be without emotions, and when he did show some human qualities, he blew hot, then cold.
Also although Enrico stressed that he was overly cautious because his son had been kidnapped, he never seemed to have body guards watching his kids when they left the house.
When Enrico said those famous last words on pg 44 "I wouldn't have done anything to hurt you." I thought oh, ooh, here it comes. And it didn't take long, pg 46,47,76,110,174 made me want to throw the book in the trash. But as I said I like Helen Brooks, and sure enough the ending was worth the stress the book put me though.
In fact I have this uncanny(sometimes scary) ability to go into the book, and I find I see the characters and real people, and often I want to tap them on the arm and point out some inconsistencies that they themselves have overlooked, and most of the time I really do enjoy it.
Even when the eyes of Enrico r black pg 7, 11, 24 to the end of the book, and then brown pg 8, 15. I think maybe Ms Brooks was distracted by one of her family and because most of the men in her books have black or brown hair, she just slipped back into the writing of the book before cheeking to see what color eyes Enrico has. The fact that some books I have read have changed the characters names throughout the book is another reason I can see why these small mistakes are made. But they do,(for me)detract from the story.

Mr. Natural is a 1960s guru, "th' only knower of th' cosmic mysteries alive at this time." Calling him a "mystic madcap" gives the crass, less-than-compassionate charlatan the benefit of the doubt. He is not particularly wise or helpful; in fact, he's a lecherous, grumbling old geezer who gives advice such as "When you arise in the morning, you should do last night's dirty dishes . . . then you should sing a simple melody (of your own choice) . . . then you should call somebody up (not me) . . . then go to the store . . . buy some asparagus." True to the collection's name and R. Crumb's reputation, the stories are sometimes sexually graphic (especially in the scenes with Devil Girl) and a bit on the violent side. Still, there's an innocent, upbeat quality to this comic reflection of America's most notoriously freewheeling decade.

The un-guru

If--perish the thought!--all of R. Crumb's work except his Mr Natural comix were lost to humankind, we'd still have what I take to be his most important legacy. An entire college course could be taught--probably HAS been taught somewhere--with the Mr Natural comix as texts.

Mr Natural is a guru who does exactly what good gurus ought to do: he shakes us up by refusing to act like we think holy people should act. He has a roving eye for the ladies, he cusses, at times he appears heartless or indifferent, and the advice he offers--when he does offer it, which isn't all that often--frequently comes across as whacky. He's so irreverent that it's easy to see him as irrelevant. But nothing could be further from the truth, because Mr Natural is like one of those Taoist sages who, dressed in rags and laughing uproariously, serve as living reminders for the rest of us not to take ourselves, our lifestyles, and our values so seriously. Self-honesty is what Mr Natural wants from us.

As Flakey Foont discovers over and over in the Mr Natural comix, though, self-honesty is hard to come by, because self-deception feels so damn good, especially to us "booshwah" types. We deceive ourselves all the time about our seething sexual desires ("Mr Natural stops Talking," "The Girlfriend," and the marvelous Devil Girl stories). We deceive ourselves about our piety, pretending that what we want to believe is what we should believe ("Mr Natural Goes to a Meeting of the Minds," "Om Sweet Om," and "Sittin' Around the Kitchen Table"). We deceive ourselves about work and ambition ("It's a workaday World") and, in one of the best two stories in this volume, we deceive ourselves when we think about God ("Mr Natural Meets 'The Kid'").* In all these stories, sacred cow after sacred cow runs off into the sunset, mooing gaily.

And as if all that's not good enough, R. Crumb gives us the definitive biography of Mr Natural--complete with early and rare photos--in this volume (pp. 42-44). This story alone is worth the price of the entire book.

Truly, a great collection!

A funny reminder of a lost time

When I was in high school in the early 1970s, a candy store a few blocks from the school sold Zap comics, though the owner kept them hidden. This helped me discover the wacky world of Robert Crumb, and the many other artists whose work was in Zap (notably Gilbert Shelton, and the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers). Reading this recently brought back some memories of that lost time, but the later stories in the book leave a lot to be desired. As with much of this work - and the same is true with Shelton - there was a brief period when these artists were able to capture the time, but as years passed, they kept on repeating themselves, and their work ends up like aging hippies.

It's a fun read, but it's not Crumb's best work. However, it does bring back good memories.

If only I had save those original Zap comics and other underground comics I had back then...

The smell of the Summer of Love is strong with this one

I don't know if I have anything coherent or meaningful to say about R. Crumb's THE BOOK OF MR. NATURAL, the collected stories of a character who is very much a product of a very specific time -- and that time was before I was born. Mr. Natural is described on the back cover as a "bearded, robed, curmudgeonly guru," but, really, he was just one in a long line of Crumb stand-ins, embodying one particular part of Crumb's own psyche to make particular points about contemporary society. Natural was the hippie side of Crumb, I suppose, forever disdaining all kinds of restraints, seeking mystical guidance from supernatural forces of one kind or another, and, most centrally, nakedly questioning the point of life and what, if anything, we're supposed to do with ourselves while we're alive. He does this, most usually, in pseudo-Socratic dialogues with Flakey Foont -- yes, these characters were conceived in the late '60s, and that permeates everything about them -- who is just as stereotyped an "Establishment" "square" "straight man" as Natural is a stereotype old hippie. (Though Crumb did anticipate what the real hippies would turn into, a couple of decades ahead.) I find it all a bit sad and woolly-headed, forty years later, but I am a well-known grump with no soul; more spiritually-oriented folks are likely to get more out of Natural's antics than I do.

MIT Review presents terrific SF based on emerging and future science

Every year, the MIT Technology Review puts together an anthology of science fiction based on stories covered that year in the MIT journal. This time around, it features stories by Bruce Sterling, Annalee Newitz and almost a dozen more writers with some terrific art by Virgil Finlay. The short stories are really short, so you're getting a jam-packed collection of SF in about 200 pages. I'm not sure which story is my favorite. As I write this, it's Ilona Gaynor's "Lexicography of an Abusive but Divine Relationship with the World." Each story has a new statement to make about the future.
