Form Based Codes: A Guide for Planners, Urban Designers, Municipalities, and Developers, by Daniel G. Parolek, Karen Parolek, Paul C. Craw

A comprehensive, illustrative guide to Form-Based Codes

"This volume describes in clear argument and significant detail the issues and techniques associated with the design and management of Form-Based Codes as an antidote to zoning and sprawl. Reading it and putting it to practice is an excellent point of departure for individuals and municipalities to safeguard and to grow their communities."
- From the Foreword by noted architect and urbanist Stefanos Polyzoides

Form-Based Codes are the latest evolutionary step in the practice of development and land-use regulation. A growing alternative to conventional zoning laws, Form-Based Codes go beyond land use to address not just the physical form of buildings but also surrounding streets, blocks, and public spaces in order to create, protect, and revitalize sustainable communities.

Written by three recognized leaders in the field of New Urbanism, including an urban planner and an architect, this book is the first to address this subject comprehensively. After defining Form-Based Codes and explaining why they are a necessary alternative to conventional zoning regulations, the authors detail the various components of Form-Based Codes and then go step by step through the process of creating and implementing them. Finally, a series of case studies illustrates best practice applications of Form-Based Coding at various scales from county-wide to site specific, and various project types from city-wide development code replacement to the preservation or evolution of downtowns.

This timely and accessible text features:
* More than 200 clear illustrations of Form-Based Codes
* Studies of real-world applications of Form-Based Coding by leading planners, urban designers, and architects

Form-Based Codes is a must-read for today's urban designers, urban planners, architects, and anyone with a vested interest in utilizing the latest regulatory tool to help create compact, walkable, and sustainable communities.

Review
"Measured and thoughtful, Form-Based Codes is an intelligent how-to. Like a good textbook, the thoughts build one upon the other until you can see the clarity and wisdom of shedding your city's zoning and moving to an enlightened future based on form rather than use." (Planetizen.com; 11/24/08)

"The term form-based, though coined in 2001, actually evolved from the seminal Seaside, Florida, design of 1981. But fundamental misunderstandings about eh specifics of its components, visioning process, and implementation continue to this day because no comprehensive reference source has been available. The purpose of this book is to fill that gap, and it succeeds admirably. In essence what the authors have presented is a step-by-step, highly detailed textbook." (Urban Land, June 2009)

"…explains the purposes of form-based codes (FBCs) and explores the ins and outs of their creation, authorization, and implementation." (New Urban News, April-May 2008)

Excellent and Exhaustive Introduction to Form-Based Codes
By Urban Designer
This is a good book rich with resources to easily understand why Form-Based Codes are needed to improve the formless nature of sprawl. The book does an excellent job of making practitioners understand how to go about putting together a Form-Based Code. The materials in the book are well-organized and presented with clear graphics. For the case studies -- especially where the Form-Based Codes have been implemented -- it would have been great to see images of what improvements in the built environment were actually achieved. Regardless, if you are an architect, planner or urban designer, get this book as it will enable you to write effective Form-Based Codes and help create better public realms.

Form-Based Codes
By Harold Henderson
A good form-based code depends on sophisticated design insights. But the book's reason for being is to explain the job to people without sophisticated design insights. (How else to change an entire built environment in a hurry?) Hence its incredible level of detail, right down to the best typography to use in presenting the proposed code. The book sets a floor: followed faithfully, it can enable diligent but uncreative professionals to produce a better form-based code than they might otherwise. That form-based code in turn will enable diligent but uncreative professionals to produce a better town or neighborhood than they might otherwise. But will that floor over time become a ceiling? Predictable outcomes are what residents want; but creativity isn't predictable.

Can you multiply 35x35 in your head? That is, can you square the number 35?

There's a mental math trick so that you can easily square any number ending in 5. Here's how the trick works.

Look at the first digit of 35, which is the number 3. We add one to that number, 4, and then multiply those two numbers together. So we have 3x4 = 12, and these are the leading digits of the answer.

Now we just write 25 as the last two digits, so we get 1225. And that's it! We have calculated 35 squared is 1,225 in an amazingly simple way!

Math does not have to be hard. The Best Mental Math Tricks is a collection of methods that can help you become a lightning calculator and look like a genius. You will learn how to solve daily problems like calculating percentages and figuring out which day your birthday is every year. Then you will learn how to square numbers, multiply numbers, divide numbers, and even solve complex problems like calculating the cube root of numbers in your head!

Each method is explained in detail with numerous examples. Every method is mathematically justified with a formal proof. Each section also contains practice problems accompanied with complete solutions so you can try the method and check your work.

not only mental math tricks, but their explanations too!
By Maurizio Codogno
Have you ever looked at people seemingly able to perform arithmetical operations quicklier than your digiting the numbers on your pocket computer? Would you like to perform similar stunts? Then, this book is for you!
Some numeric feats depend on rote learning a lot of data, but other ones are much easier to perform with just a little training: Presh Talwalkar presents a lot of them, all of which are manageable for an average person. I particularly liked the multiplication of two numbers near 200, 300, ... and the division by 19. The nice thing is that *every* trick is presented with its mathematical explanation, so that the mistery of magic vanishes... but only for the initiati!

Overall very good
By Amazon Customer
Many useful tips with examples and practice problems. Also has proofs for those inclined to delve further into the mathematics. The memorization for some tricks may outweigh their usefulness but for many others it's a reasonable trade-off. Overall, very good.

Ronald insisted that she was mistaken-- but Jennifer's positive identification was the compelling evidence that put him behind bars.

After eleven years, Ronald was allowed to take a DNA test that proved his innocence. He was released, after serving more than a decade in prison for a crime he never committed. Two years later, Jennifer and Ronald met face to face-- and forged an unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives.

With Picking Cotton, Jennifer and Ronald tell in their own words the harrowing details of their tragedy, and challenge our ideas of memory and judgment while demonstrating the profound nature of human grace and the healing power of forgiveness.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Kate Tuttle Nearly everyone in prison protests their innocence, but Ronald Cotton was telling the truth. Cotton was just 22 when he walked into a Burlington, N.C., police station to answer rape allegations; he spent the next 11 years seeking freedom. "Put a man in a cage with beasts and throw away the key, and it's usually not long before the man is a beast himself," he writes in this unusual joint memoir, written with his accuser and now friend, Jennifer Thompson-Cannino. Considering the odds stacked against him -- a bum alibi, a victim focused on being the strongest possible witness, a justice system all too willing to send another young black man to jail -- it's extraordinary that Cotton emerged from prison at all. More stunning still was his willingness, upon exoneration by DNA evidence, to forgive the people who had put him there, including rape victim Thompson-Cannino, whose erroneous identification of Cotton in a police line-up had begun his horrible odyssey. Their story, told here in alternating sections, emphasizes that both were victims. Still, as both acknowledge, Thompson-Cannino, traumatized as she was, spent the next decade in freedom, marrying and having kids, while Cotton endured prison. Left mostly unexamined is the role that race played in his incarceration, but even the most cynical reader will be impressed by Cotton's resilience and grace.

A real eye opener
By Sam Sattler
In 1984 a college student woke up in her Burlington, North Carolina, apartment to find a young black man in her bed who intended to rape her. Because Jennifer Thompson was about half the size of the man she faced, and was already pinned down by his weight by the time she awoke, she recognized that any physical defense she presented would only worsen her situation. Jennifer, however, was not prepared to give up that easily. As the man began raping her she made a conscious effort to study his face and everything about him so that she would be able to work as closely as possible with the police on his capture. She even talked him into interrupting the rape long enough for her to escape the apartment and run for help.

Jennifer's attention to detail resulted in the well-executed police artist sketch that would lead to the quick arrest of Ronald Cotton, a local man, as the man who raped her and another woman on the same night.

Cotton was not at all worried when his family told him the Burlington Police Department wanted to speak with him in connection with the two rapes. He knew he had a rock-solid alibi for the night in question, so he drove himself to the police station in order to prove that he had nothing to do with either crime. Unfortunately for Cotton, he got his dates mixed up, making his supposed alibi worthless, and he was charged with both rapes.

The trial jury recognized Cotton's resemblance to the police sketch and considered Thompson to be an exceptional witness because of her decision to concentrate on her assailant even as the assault against her was happening. Her strong trial testimony, during which she appeared to be absolutely certain of Cotton's guilt, was all the jury needed to convict Cotton of her rape, and they quickly did just that.

Eleven years later, in 1995, DNA testing would prove that Ronald Cotton had nothing to do with Jennifer Thompson's rape and he was freed from prison, a dream that Cotton had all but given up on ever seeing happen. Ronald Cotton, now in his early thirties and lucky to have survived more than a decade in prison, was back with his family hoping to start a new life for himself.

Tragic as all of this is, it is far from being a unique story because, sadly, this kind of thing happens more than anyone in law enforcement would care to admit. Thousands of people have been imprisoned with no more evidence against them than the word of their accuser. Honest mistakes are made, lies are purposely told, and justice is not always blind.

No, the truly remarkable part of this story is what happened next.

Jennifer Thompson, married and the mother of triplets by the time of Cotton's release, feared that he would take his revenge by harming her or her children. Two years passed before the two of them finally came face-to-face but, when it did happen, both their lives were changed forever. Cotton, an extremely compassionate man, surprised Thompson by readily offering his forgiveness in their first conversation - and that would be the beginning of a powerful, loving friendship between the two and their families that is still going strong.

Today Cotton and Thompson work together to bring attention to other inmates around the country who have been imprisoned under circumstances similar to those that placed Ronald Cotton in jeopardy of spending his whole life in a jail cell. Much good has come from the awful circumstances that have linked forever the lives of these two people, and Thompson and Cotton have both thanked God that Cotton is the one she chose that day in the Burlington police station if she was destined to get it wrong.

Read "Picking Cotton" to get the rest of the story - there's a lot more.

I'll Never Forget That Face
By Smoten
Crime victims often say that about their assailant and often they are wrong. Single witness identification cases are the bane of the criminal justice system and every year more and more innocent men are freed from prison by irrefutable scientific evidence that may not have been available at the time of their convictions. Well and good, but since the overwhelming majority of cases do not involve DNA, do not involve trace evidence of any kind, there is no way of knowing how many innocent people still languish in prison, put there on the strength of a single eyewitness, an honest person trying to get it right who nonetheless got it wrong with tragic consequences.

Ronald Cotton did not rape Jennifer Thompson. She was sure he did-she would never forget that face-and two separate juries found her identification so compelling that Mr.Cotton was twice convicted and sentenced to life. He was exonerated by DNA after eleven long years in prison. "Picking Cotton", co-authored by both victims, is more than just another tale of a misfiring justice system. It is also a powerful story of grace and forgiveness. Not only has Mr. Cotton forgiven Ms. Thompson for her mistaken identification of him, but he has become her friend. He truly is a remarkable man. Ms. Thompson is also quite remarkable. She travels the country with Mr. Cotton, telling their story, and warning of the dangers of identification testimony. She has championed changes in identification procedures used by police to make them more fair and has seen such changes enacted in her home state of North Carolina, the scene of the crime. "Picking Cotton" is a cautionary tale that should be required reading in every police academy and law school in the country.

In the eye of the beholder...
By lmj
Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton is the well told story of the two authors. Jennifer was a college student in 1984 when a knife-wielding man broke into her apartment and raped her. She works to remember her assailant so she can identify him. She identifies Ronald Cotton. Due to appeals, Jennifer is staunch in her identification of Cotton through a second trial after which Cotton is sentenced to Life Imprisonment plus 54 years. Because of the OJ Simpson murder trial, Cotton learns of a new test that may prove the innocence he has professed from the night he turned himself into the police "to straighten out this situation." The new test is DNA. After 11 years in prison, Cotton is exonerated through a combination of the DNA test results and the confession of the rapist. The story could have ended there, but does not. Cotton proves to be a true Christian in forgiving the woman he could have hated for the rest of her life. As profound as Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking. Two admirable people making the world more just.

Through the account, we understand Jennifer's anquish and sense of violation. From the beginning, Ron seems a remarkable person never bitter about his circumstances, but still missing parts of life many would take for granted such as birthdays, anniversaries, funerals.

A documentary for PBS is made about Cotton's case. At the end, he questions that Jennifer has never contacted him. When she does (after watching the documentary) she is surprised by his acceptance of her. Eventually, the two work together on other cases of injustice throughout the United States.

The book presents serious questions about the criminal justice system - especially the validity of eyewitnesses. No easy answers. Just two people now working together to change the world one case at a time.

On par with Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking.

Looks great, but buy only if you've beat all the games on Big Boss difficulty
By Amazon Customer
The book quality is fantastic, with superior paper and ink used during printing. I'll knock it a few stars mainly because the story is fairly incoherent unless you are a true MGS fan (and even then it's very abbreviated) and the artwork is abstracted to the point of being equally muddled (characters look identical, art style changes from panel to panel). Still, the price is right for 24 issues worth of content and it looks great on the bookshelf.

Great for Metal Gear Solid Fans
By Marioman1985
Metal Gear Solid Omnibus is a collection of the entire run of the comic series based on MGS 1 and 2. The comics are very fateful to the original source material, and take dialogue directly from the games. New dailogue has also been added and some scenes and codec conversations have been removed. Obiously the games are too long for everything to be included so this is understandable. The art is drawn by Ashley Wood who is mostly known for his work on the hand-drawn cutscenes shown in MGS: Portable Ops and the recently releaed MGS: Peace Walker. His art works extremely well with the script and it really does it job by telling the story of the games. Long time fans will likely apreciate this collection the most and if you have little experience with the games, then this book will likely not make as much sense to you. Overall, this book is great piece to add to a Metal Gear Solid fan's collection. I recommend it.

Good art but the writing...
By Aaron
I enjoyed this book but I cannot honestly give it a 5 star rating. The story is hard to follow due to the art and the fact that the dialogue was shortened from the games. If you've played the games then the story will come together but I can see outsiders having a problem with some of the scenes. The book is a buy for any fan and the art is wonderful and unique. I really like this collection, it is put together very well, it just lacks some definition.

“INCREDIBLE!” CHASE EXCLAIMED, HIS GRAY EYES assessing Ivy with mock admiration.

Ivy, Will, and Beth squeezed together on their picnic blanket to make room. Chase had arrived at the last minute, claiming a place on the bayside beach among the Fourth of July revelers. Somehow, he always seemed to find them.

“Last year your boyfriend was murdered,” Chase went on, his eyes bright with amusement. “This year you hook up with a cold-blooded killer. That’s quite a dating résumé for a nice girl like you!”

Ivy wanted to tell him off; instead, she shook her head as if she could hardly believe how badly she had been deceived. “It’s horrifying! I was totally fooled by Luke. I never thought he was capable of violence.”

“It was obvious to me,” Chase replied.

Will, who had been aimlessly drawing in the sand, threw aside the stick he’d been using. He lifted his head, his brown eyes narrowing with dislike. Ivy knew why.

Chase had been curious about the stranger who had washed up on Lighthouse Beach and skeptical about Luke’s amnesia. But it was Will who had repeatedly warned her that a guy found badly beaten and unconscious, who claimed he had no idea how it happened, probably had a dark past. Ivy had attributed Will’s warnings to his habit of being protective of her. When she had ended her romantic relationship with Will, she’d chalked up his actions to jealousy. But in the end, Will’s decision to report Ivy’s new love to the police had appeared to be the right one. Luke McKenna was on the run, wanted for strangling his ex-girlfriend.

“It’s over now,” Will said. “Let’s drop the subject.”

“I was just thinking—” Chase persisted.

“It’s over!” Will snapped.

Ivy knew that, given what Will and the others didn’t know, Will’s anger with her was justified. The fact that he was able to keep it down to a simmer and continue to work with her at the Seabright Inn was evidence of his strong character. Last summer, when Tristan had died, Will had risked his life to save Ivy from Tristan’s murderer, Gregory. As far as her friends knew, Ivy had recently broken up with Luke because she had been deceived once more by a “cold-blooded killer.”

“It’s not over,” Beth said.

Everyone turned to her.

“He will have revenge.”

The skin on Ivy’s arm prickled. Was Beth talking about Luke—or Gregory?

“Luke got his revenge when he strangled that girl,” Chase replied. “He’s on the lam. If he has half a brain, he’s far away by now.”

Luke McKenna was far away, Ivy thought. He had drowned the night Tristan crawled to shore in Luke’s body. But where was Tristan?

Ivy prayed he was somewhere safe, a place where the police would never find him and charge him with Luke’s crime. But safety meant he was far away from here, far away from her. She ached as much as she had the first time she had lost him.

Withdrawing from the conversation, Ivy gazed out at the dark water of Cape Cod Bay. Now and then a small flare discharged, brightening the outlines of a barge laden with fireworks. People impatiently checked the time on their cell phones and watches. Finally, a bright missile shot up from the barge, and every face turned toward the sky.

“Oh!” the spectators exclaimed in one breath. Color exploded against the night sky, bright red bars ending in a circle of stars. Ivy watched the fireworks’ falling sparks: pure bits of light suddenly going dark and drifting into nothingness.

Why was Tristan inside Luke’s body? she wondered. Lacey claimed that Tristan had fallen the night he used his angelic powers to give life to Ivy. Was he a dark angel now? Ivy’s heart rebelled at the thought. Tristan had acted in pure love. Her stepbrother, Gregory, had acted with jealousy, greed, and deadly anger. Last summer, trying to murder her, he had killed Tristan instead. For a time, Gregory had pretended to grieve with and comfort Ivy. He’d acted the part of loving older brother with her younger brother, Philip, just to get to her. If Gregory had had his way, he would have killed them both. It was Gregory who had died and become a demon, not Tristan.

A cascade of colors brought her back to the present. Purple splashed over brilliant green, gold spilled over purple. The sky is raining fire, she thought. She turned to look at Beth and caught her breath: Her best friend gazed back at her, fire and darkness in her eyes. A series of booms drew Beth’s attention. A finale of garish explosions bathed Beth’s upturned face in a sinister radiance.

It was over; smoke hung heavily over the still bay. A moment of silence was followed by applause and a blast of boat horns. People around them stood up, talking excitedly about which firework was their favorite.

“I’ve seen better,” Chase said as they crossed the beach toward Wharf Lane. “In Jackson Hole—”

“Life must be a continual disappointment to you,” Will observed, “since you’ve always seen and experienced something better.”

Chase shrugged. “Why pretend? I dislike false modesty. Don’t you, Elizabeth?” he added, draping his arm across Beth’s shoulders.

Beth slid out from under his arm, and he laughed. The more Beth tried to get away from Chase, the harder he pursued her. Initially, her reunion with a boy she had known since middle-school summers on the Cape had left Beth in awe. Somehow gawky Chase Hardy had morphed into a tall, broad-shouldered guy with sea-mist eyes and dark curly hair. He could have dropped out of any one of the romances Beth liked to write. But since the night of the séance, Beth had changed, withdrawing from him, from Ivy, from most everyone but Will.

Watching Chase and Beth together, Will frowned. Ivy wondered if it was his dislike for Chase or his surprise at Beth’s behavior that prompted his reaction. The old Beth, the most sensitive person Ivy knew, would have let a cobra rest on her shoulders if she feared she might otherwise hurt its feelings.

For the last week Ivy had kept her discovery about Beth’s secret, hoping she was wrong—knowing she wasn’t—looking for the right moment to talk with Will about their friend. In retrospect, it seemed so clear: Beth, a natural medium, would be the easiest mind for Gregory to slip into. Still, everything about Beth, her voice and softly rounded face and feathery sweep of light-colored hair, was gentle. It was only when Ivy dared to look into Beth’s darkening eyes that she could believe Gregory was present in her friend.

Chase fell into step with Will as they started up Wharf Lane, discussing movies. Ivy walked beside Beth, who kept her face averted, as if she were interested only in the dark hedges and stone walls that lined the narrow road. The lane ended at Route 6A, where a large Victorian house occupied one corner and an old church perched on the other. Will had parked in the pebble lot behind the church.

“Hold up,” Will said, pausing at the edge of the lot. “I want to take a look at this place.” An artist, he was always on the hunt for interesting landscapes and buildings.

They followed him as he circled the church. It was small, with just three sets of elongated double windows on each side, steep rooflines, and triangular dormers. A square bell tower anchored the corner of the wooden building, its high porch covered by a trussed roof forming the entrance to the church. The wood that sheathed the bell tower was laid in narrow bands, the first story running horizontally, the second vertically, with the boards below the bell cut in wavy lines as if an expert baker had iced the blocky tower with a delicate knife.

The church’s doors were locked—Will tried them. Chase stood at the bottom of the steps, looking bored. Beth backed away from the building, her arms folded and shoulders hunched as if she were cold.

“This isn’t a church anymore,” Ivy said, reading a lawn placard. “They’re raising money to restore the building and use it for community events.” She walked back to where Beth stood and gazed upward into the tower’s shadows, seeing a faint outline against the night sky. “It looks as if it still has its bell.”

“‘Ask not for whom the bell tolls,’” Chase quoted in a fake British voice. “‘It tolls for thee.’”

Beth glanced over her shoulder apprehensively, then her eyes rose to the bell. “It will toll when it’s time,” she said softly.

“John Donne, seventeenth-century poet and homilist,” Chase continued. “He’s talking about how we don’t see our own connection to other humans, how each person whose life has been lost is our loss and—”

“I see it,” Beth said. Then she added so quietly only Ivy could hear, “Soon. The bell will toll soon.”

The skin on the back of Ivy’s neck felt cold. Sometimes, when Beth “saw” things, she foresaw them. Was she speaking as herself or for Gregory? Was she seeing his plan? Was someone going to die soon?

Ivy laid a hand on her friend’s arm. “Beth—”

Beth shook it off and walked away, taking the long route, circling the church counterclockwise back to the car.

“Angels protect her,” Ivy prayed. “Angels protect us all.”
