Terrible book. Do NOT recommend.

I'm in my 2nd semester of Arabic at the college level and we're using this book. Well, using is sort of the wrong word. Better to say we're struggling with this book, because it's just so horribly bad.

To start with, as other reviewers mentioned, the jump between Alif Baa (the first book in the series) and this one is just way too big. We covered Alif Baa in the first semester and it basically taught us how to read, write, and pronounce Arabic, which was fine. We got a few phrases and learned the names of some of the grammatical marks. We learned the voweling. That was fine. But, when you open Al-Kitaab, everything in the table of contents is in Arabic, even though it's almost all words you won't have been introduced to yet. One of the first exercises asks you to question your classmate about certain aspects of their life, when that requires vocabulary you won't have and a knowledge of Arabic sentence structure that you won't have.

I'm also really agitated about how unorganized this book is. There is no unified area to look at pronoun charts, conjugation charts, or plural charts. It's introduced sporadically throughout the text. It would be better to have it in an index. In other cases, you're given the conjugation of a verb like "I memorize", "he reads" as vocabulary words, but you're not given the full conjugation chart so you know how to use it for more than just that one conjugation. Of course, you could go back through the whole text to see if it was explained somewhere, but that's a crap way of doing things.

Really, without a teacher to explain things clearly, this book would be completely useless. COMPLETELY USELESS. And a complete waste of money. If you don't need this for a class, DO NOT BUY IT.

Between the end of Spring Semester and Fall Semester (3rd level of Arabic), I'm going to have to review so I don't forget all the Arabic I've learned, but I'm going to have to do that with other materials, because this book wouldn't do anything but frustrate me.

Edit: I'm now in my 3rd semester of Arabic, still using this book. Every time I open this book I get angry. Very angry. It's extremely confusing and the way grammatical concepts are introduced is ridiculous. They either say too little or too much and then jump right into something else. It's absurd. I had to re-read the two pages on fronted predicates 4 times and then go ask a native speaker before I understood what it means and how it's supposed to be used. I had to get help from outside the book to figure out what musaadar are and how they work, and now I'm sitting here looking at an exercise (on pg 155) asking me to ask "...who should be able to join the army". We haven't learned the vocabulary for "should be able to", so how the hell am I supposed to ask this question? Why am I being asked to do something that hasn't been introduced yet? Another complaint I have is that there just aren't enough reading exercises in the book. The easiest way to learn usage and grammar is through exposure, for me at least, and there's just really not a lot to read in this book. I'm not a bad student. My GPA hovers around a 3.9. This book is just terrible, and it's affected my academic performance.

A huge burden on teachers and students

I recently took an introductory Arabic course at a large public university that uses this textbook. Having learned another "critical language" for nearly twenty years and having taught that language at the university level for another five years, I hope that I can provide some helpful perspective on this new edition of Al-Kitaab.

Some of the methods used by this textbook--especially its focus on listening comprehension--are excellent. Despite certain advantages, however, I believe the third edition would work only for a course taught by a very experienced teacher who has already developed a large number of exercises and assignments that can be provided separately to students. Without all of these additional materials already in place, however, the current book/website package is simply not enough for teaching the language in a way that will allow students to feel that they are making progress and mastering the material.

More specific comments:

1) Many textbook sets come with a separate workbook or extensive exercises to practice the vocabulary and patterns taught in each lesson. They may be simple, repetitive, and kind of boring, but this method allows students to form sentences and learn through repetition. In this edition al-Kitaab, however, very few exercises are available in the textbook, and nearly all of them are "fill in the blank"; students are rarely, if ever, required to write a full sentence in Arabic - a decision by the authors that I find impossible to understand. Moreover, rather than ask students to perform one type of isolated task repeatedly, e.g. conjugate a set of verbs, practice the iDaafa form, or insert subject and object pronouns, etc., many of the exercises are extremely dense, using vocabulary and grammatical forms taught in other lessons, often in forms (like the plural) that cannot be looked up in the glossary. In many cases, it feels as if a game of "gotcha" is being played - the student simply cannot proceed if he or she has not learned all of the previous material perfectly. In other cases, the exercises introduce word order and vocabulary that students have not learned, with the expectation that they will simply "catch on" or go with the flow until the material is explained. The result, however, is the opposite: some of the exercises are so difficult to use that I saw several very motivated learners in my class become completely frustrated with the book.

2) The textbook focuses far too much on teaching grammatical terminology *in Arabic*, at the expense of actually conveying information on how Arabic grammar and word order work. For example, in Lesson 4 the text goes into a very detailed discussion of noun sentences and verb sentences, all without providing explicit discussion and examples of how word order really works in these sentences; that very basic aspect of teaching, apparently, is left to the instructor. (A far clearer and more accessible explanation was found on half a page in Schulz's "Standard Arabic: An Elementary-Intermediate Course.") If the authors want to take a communicative approach, it makes very little sense to force feed this terminology (and always print it in Arabic script after it is taught for the first time, without romanization) without providing the necessary amount of examples and review.

3) Too often, the vocabulary used in the lessons is not matched well with the glossary or the overall pacing of the book. For example, you will encounter words like "television," "Russia," and "Riyadh," many times in the exercises, but if you want to write them yourself and check your spelling, you will not find them in the English-Arabic glossary at the back of the book. By the time you reach Lesson 9 or 10, you will also encounter terms in the exercises that have not yet been introduced in any of the lessons, and thus end up spending time flipping through the glossary to figure out the meaning of a word from Lesson 11 or 12 -- instead of focusing on what is being taught in the current lesson. I don't know if this is the result of poor editing or hard-line "communicative" strategies, but it is certainly a waste of time for the student.

4) The textbook (and publisher) should just come out and say that students need to purchase three different products: the textbook, the website subscription, and the answer key. The free CD that comes with the book was very confusing to me (in many places is it not clear what the headphones icon printed in the text is supposed to mean). Moreover, given the difficulty of the exercises, especially the sentences on the audio files that are supposed to provide context for vocabulary, there is no way to approach some of the exercises without the answer key.

From my point of view, many of these problems could be solved by providing an easy, straightforward workbook to go along with the main text. Barring that, however, I can only recommend this edition with a huge, up-front warning that the instructor is going to have to reinvent the wheel with each lesson by designing reasonable homework assignments that do not confuse or overload students.

One step forward two steps backwards

I learned from the 2nd edition this summer and loved it. It was very systematic and rigorous. Now I am continuing to study on my own and decided to purchase the 3rd edition so that I could also use the e-book, which is not available for the 2nd ed. The 3rd edition has added information about dialects, which is nice to a point, but cutting some MSA drills out and making the remaining drills shorter to fit practice with dialects is a badly thought out trade off. The result is going to be that students end up with a weaker command of MSA and probably will not master much of the dialects either because the practice isn't really systematic. In the early stages of learning, the most important thing is repetition until processing becomes automatic. The 2nd edition did a marvelous job of this. The 3rd edition, not so much. The 3rd has more information but far less repetition. I really miss the writing practice and chance to get feedback on that. Dialects should be informational or sold in a separate supplement and Al-Kitaab should go back to its older format. I especially don't see the need to write out exercises in dialect. Those should be for speaking and listening and recognition. Also, I am very disappointed that the glossaries in the ebook do not have links to sounds for the vocabulary. This means the user still has to go find the word in the chapter if s/he wants to hear it pronounced, and even then not all the forms are pronounced. If you have a choice between 2nd and 3rd edition, go with the 2nd.

Not LIke the Good Old Days

You know, I normally love this author's books; I probably have everything available by him on Amazon in the past couple of years. He has been one of those authors where I just automatically buy his books when they come out. And like the other reviewer, I have greatly enjoyed the gargoyle storyline. Having said that, it seems like the last few books have been, as they say "phoned in." The plots and characters have less depth, the books are shorter (for the same price) and the books just don't grab me like in the past.

I'm sure I'll continue to purchase many of this author's books, but not automatically anymore. I enjoyed this author's other recent release much more than this one, and I used to really love the Stoneridge and Kontra series. Makes me sad.

Manipulated to love

I purchased this book awhile ago when I was in the midst of reading the A PARANORMALS LOVE STORY series. I even began reading it, but set it aside until two weeks ago, when I bought the next in the series, A HOT BLOODED ALLIGATOR.
I had been waiting for the Gator's book for some time.

Anyway getting back this book, can you imagine suddenly being thrust in the paranormal world? To not only witness things that can't exist to being told you have unwittingly been a Vampire's little honey snack. Even when you try to break up with the philandering Vamp you still don't know why you can't Just Say No. That is until your whole world imploded! Not only were you attacked by a Wolf that turned into a man, your charismatic lover turns out to be a honest to goodness blood sucking Vampire! As if that weren't enough your best friend (Logan) becomes involved with the Wolf Man and is being followed by a flying Gargoyle. OMG!

And now that Gargoyle was claiming to be his "mate"? Is it any wonder Zander wanted to be left alone once the Wolf pack no longer held he and Logan captive? He tended to his goats and fretted about the impossible things that had been happening to him. He was still so angry about what occurred with the Vampire, he couldn't stop thinking about it. In particular how he'd used his special powers to compel Zander to keep seeing the Vampire even when he wanted to stop - tried to stop.

The Vampire forced Zander to let him in his home so he could feed from him. He hated the sneaky paranormals that took advantage of poor innocent humans who had no idea they even existed. Zander was annoyed that even though he stayed out of sight, the Gargoyle was still lurking around. Why didn't they leave him alone?!

Lucky for Geoffrey he was a very patient Gargoyle. Because even though his frightened Human mate didn't want anything to do with him, he was not about to abandon Zander. He was determined to wait him out, but Geoffrey couldn't stop himself from swooping in and rescuing Zander when he was attacked & hurt by his aggressive male goat. Zander knew the Gargoyle had been out there somewhere lurking around. Which was one of the reasons he'd been on pins and needles. The other reason was he could feel himself becoming attracted to the literal big "Stiff". And that was absolutely the last thing he wanted. To be mesmerized into unwanted feelings for another paranormal creature of the night.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Especially after not being able to get into it the first time I tried to read it. It's a story about learning to trust. About how hard it can be for humans to introduced to the world of paranormals. I never thought how the mate bond could feel like being manipulated against your will. And how easy it would be for a human fated mate to think it's his mate's glamour that's making him feel so attracted to the paranormal.

The Goat Farmer’s Guardian is the tenth installment in Charlie Richard’s A Paranormal Love Series. The story revisits Zander and Geoffrey and picks up after the events of a previous book in the series.

Zander’s introduction into the paranormal world was a bad experience and thus Geoffrey had to work harder to convince his mate that he meant no harm and only wanted Zander’s happiness. Or at least that was the premise of this story. The execution, however, had some holes and left me wanting. This was very short, so there was only so much the author could do, but things just happened to easily. Yes, Zander put up the token fight by randomly getting angry when he felt the paranormals were manipulating him. But that anger always faded almost instantly and after only a few chats with Geoffrey about being mates, he decided all was well and they were meant to be happy together forever. He even stepped in to help save the family of the vampire who used him for blood. I felt confused as to motivation (besides the obvious mate pull) for most of this story.

I am glad that this one was not all about sex like some of the insta-mating stories out there. The author tried to give an actual story with a bit of emotional connection before the men mated. It was nice that this short tale did not overlook the relationship in favor of sex equals love.

Overall, I don’t know. The story was cute and happy, but I felt that much was left out in favor of word count and this story could have been much better with more development and more angst. I still enjoy Ms. Richards’ works, but for me this one needed more and is not a great representation of this series.

Finally a prayer book for Isians!

Like all of Alana's Isis products this is sure to please the Isian reader. The book is smaller than expected, but I like the portability. With this first printing the cover is a fully integrated padded hardback cover (no paper cover). I am a very tactile person and I really like the smooth feel and handling of the book.

Inside you will find one incantation page facing a full color picture page (nice layout). In the introduction it says this book is for the everyday reader and I like the portability and ease of usage since I have tight work schedule. I think this book is more approachable than her oracle deck for the novice reader (or those who don't want to use a deck). Be aware, even though many aspects of the deck cards are incorporated into the book I would not consider it an exact duplicate. I think there is something new to be gained with the information contained wherein. The one guiding factor in all the incantations/prayers is that of unconditional love. If this is something you are not into, this book is NOT for you. Also, the idea of letting magick go into the world and forgetting about your work on it is also translated throughout the book. Those who are looking for a devotional and prayer book of Isis will find the inspiration in this book, but the leanings are definitely rooted in basic magick philosophy.

The main draw back of this book is that there is no table of contents. The other detractor is that even the titles on each prayer page don't always incorporate the use of that prayer (i.e. Healing, Overcoming obstacles, etc.) so that you need to read into the first paragraph to know (or remember) which use that prayer is for. I believe with time and usage this will be less of an issue.

Overall, I really like this book, but would like to see more structure for the busy user.

I was actually expecting some new material with this book, but if you already have the Isis Oracle deck, this isn't new material (which I do). I would still purchase the book (it is small) for the simplicity and the artwork. The artwork is the same from the deck, as well as the excerpts she uses for the book, but still worth the purchase.

About the Author

Daniel G. Parolek, AIA, and KAREN PAROLEK are principals in Opticos Design, established in 2000 in Berkeley, California, as a multidisciplinary firm specializing in architecture, urban design, information design, and Form-Based Code design. They are both on the founding board of directors of the Form-Based Codes Institute.

Daniel G. Parolek is an architect who has worked on some of the most innovative New Urbanist projects and Form-Based Codes in California and across the United States. He is a frequent national lecturer and author in the field of New Urbanism, Smart Growth, and Form-Based Codes.

Karen Parolek is an information architect who strives to improve visual methods of communication on projects ranging from a wayfinding signage system for downtown New York City (while working at Pentagram Design) to Web site metadata schemas. Her most recent focus has been on the practice of Form-Based Coding.

Paul C. Crawford, FAICP, is a principal with Crawford Multari & Clark Associates in San Luis Obispo, California, and the founding board chair of the Form-Based Codes Institute. Crawford is a nationally recognized zoning expert who has personally worked on more than twenty-five Form-Based Codes, more than 100 zoning and development codes overall, and more than thirty general plans. Paul was planning director for San Luis Obispo County from 1980 to 1990, and served as adjunct professor of city and regional planning at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo from 1980 to 2006.

Excellent and Exhaustive Introduction to Form-Based Codes

This is a good book rich with resources to easily understand why Form-Based Codes are needed to improve the formless nature of sprawl. The book does an excellent job of making practitioners understand how to go about putting together a Form-Based Code. The materials in the book are well-organized and presented with clear graphics. For the case studies -- especially where the Form-Based Codes have been implemented -- it would have been great to see images of what improvements in the built environment were actually achieved. Regardless, if you are an architect, planner or urban designer, get this book as it will enable you to write effective Form-Based Codes and help create better public realms.

Form Based Codes provides an excellent ways to understand how design codes works in various stages in urban design field. I think this book guides very clear description in terms of preparing design codes and the management process. The material in this book illustrates excellently relationship between design and planning principles towards high quality environment. As an Urban Designer and Landscape Architect, I would like to express a great appreciation and many thanks to all authors.

Form-Based Codes

A good form-based code depends on sophisticated design insights. But the book's reason for being is to explain the job to people without sophisticated design insights. (How else to change an entire built environment in a hurry?) Hence its incredible level of detail, right down to the best typography to use in presenting the proposed code. The book sets a floor: followed faithfully, it can enable diligent but uncreative professionals to produce a better form-based code than they might otherwise. That form-based code in turn will enable diligent but uncreative professionals to produce a better town or neighborhood than they might otherwise. But will that floor over time become a ceiling? Predictable outcomes are what residents want; but creativity isn't predictable.

not only mental math tricks, but their explanations too!

Have you ever looked at people seemingly able to perform arithmetical operations quicklier than your digiting the numbers on your pocket computer? Would you like to perform similar stunts? Then, this book is for you!
Some numeric feats depend on rote learning a lot of data, but other ones are much easier to perform with just a little training: Presh Talwalkar presents a lot of them, all of which are manageable for an average person. I particularly liked the multiplication of two numbers near 200, 300, ... and the division by 19. The nice thing is that *every* trick is presented with its mathematical explanation, so that the mistery of magic vanishes... but only for the initiati!

Many useful tips with examples and practice problems. Also has proofs for those inclined to delve further into the mathematics. The memorization for some tricks may outweigh their usefulness but for many others it's a reasonable trade-off. Overall, very good.
