About the Author
Yevgen Barsukov is an IP development manager for battery management systems business units at Texas Instruments. He holds an M.S. in organic chemistry from Kiev National University in the Ukraine and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Kiel Christian Albrecht University in Germany.
Jinrong Qian is a sector manager and distinguished member of technical staff for battery management systems at Texas Instruments. He holds M.S. degrees in power electronics from both the University of Central Florida and Zhejiang University in China and earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

DETAILED BATTERY POWER MANAGEMENT RESOURCE!!!

Are you an engineer or a curious do-it-yourself enthusiast? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Yevgen Barsukov and Jinrong Qian, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that aims to make it clear that batteries and battery management electronics that are used, should be able to operate in the most efficient and safest way.
Authors Barsukova and Qian, begin by summarizing the best handling practices based on a particular chemistry for the most common rechargeable battery types in order to ensure the best longevity of the battery; as well as, adequate safety of the device. Next, the authors discuss battery charging algorithms, battery charging system topologies, design considerations, the main battery charger applications, and the popular battery charger ICs.
Then, they show you how to accomplish a remodeling of battery designers’ thinking; and, offer a practical solution to all of the challenges that arise from highly energetic mobile power sources. In addition, the authors discuss why when multiple cells are connected in series, the cell voltage is not always equal to the pack voltage divided by the number of cells. They continue by describing battery fuel gauging, which is the expression that everyone is using to describe what this little chip inside the battery is doing. The authors then briefly analyze the system-level ESD, EMI minimization, and specific design considerations for each piece of the end equipment. Finally, the authors apply the principles of the different ingredients of a successful battery-operated system to specific portable systems to demonstrate them in action; and, to provide you with an actionable reference template that you can use as a starting point for your own development efforts for such systems or expand to other systems with similar properties.
This most excellent book covers rechargeable battery fundamentals, explaining how any battery operates and describing the common factors to consider when choosing a battery. Furthermore, this great book explains the how and why of battery management systems; and, provides would-be designers of battery management systems and chargers with enough information to be successful. Finally, the book combines all of the various pieces of knowledge about battery management, and provides examples of complete battery-operated systems that can be cut-and-pasted into your designs.

Good first text but falls short on details

This is an excellent text to get to know the overall landscape of batteries and power management. I would not recommend paying full price though. The state of the art (almost) is described in reasonable detail. The text falls short in several areas - battery chemistry and how batteries work is treated almost as if the reader were already familiar with the topic. For example the figures on cathodes and anodes and the nomenclature is not clear at all. The use of black and white images of poor resolution makes it hard to use it as a fundamental text. Surely there are excellent images and animations available in color to describe the charging and discharging process in li-ion batteries. Fortunately several university lectures are available to fill in this gap. Another grouse of mine is that while the text claims to discuss fuel gauging algorithms, the finer details which are in some sense public domain by way of patents is treated cautiously. Given the authors are employees of a company, this is understandable from a trade secret point of view but as a text to enthuse the reader the text disappoints. In this regard, some of the app notes from TI or other companies are a better read and free of cost. References to literature are minimal and reader may have to dig into patent documents to really understand how battery gauging works in practice. A final point is the lack of exercises that would make for using this text in a classroom setting. At 50% of full price it was a great buy. I wish the authors take note of the shortcomings and come out with a color print 2nd edition.

Exceptional battery management book

I use this book both for advanced technical training, as well as training people who are new to the battery power management industry. It has a very comprehensive approach and covers topics ranging from battery chemistry fundamentals, battery safety, system considerations, to design examples. I have bought a few extra copies to share with colleagues.
