Useful but a bit short

I thought this was an informative book, albeit a bit too short. All in all, I think 30 Covert Emotional Manipulation Tactics was informative and clearly written by a person who has lived with manipulators of all sorts. If you've ever thought you were crazy, or that you just can't figure out what's going on with a person in your life, this book can help.

However, the author, AB Admin, referenced another book in her/his book, called: "Who's Pulling Your Strings" by Harriet B. Braiker Ph.D. The "Strings" book was very informative and basically a step by step of how manipulation works and how to deprogram yourself.

Shocking

As I read this book I was shocked to see all these confusing emotions I have, all the self doubt and questioning my sanity are a result of my being manipulated. Of the 30 signs my husband displays 26. I have escaped but I am an emotional wreck. This book has helped me understand that it is not my fault. That I have been controlled. This has helped me stop my endless loop of self recrimination over the failure of my marriage. Now I need to deal with the shame of being so successfully duped.in

Welcome validation for the victims of psychopathic relationships!

It was easy to overlook the large number of glaring typos and give this book 5 stars because it told me in a very concise format what I haven't learned from two years of very expensive psychoanalysis AND a Master's degree in Counseling. I'm not crazy! My intuition was not wrong. I've been in a relationship with a psychopath for two years! It was such a relief to see the feelings that the victim experiences laid out so clearly along with the characteristic behaviors of the psychopath. I've experienced every one of them. I just bought the book today and have already read it twice. I also highly recommend the author's website psychopathsandlove.com. I think I finally have the courage to end my emotionally abusive relationship. Anyone involved in a psychopathic relationship will immediately recognize it for what it is.

Only a few of excellent idea/concept in the book

Without previous experience on data warehousing or ODS, you will be killed by this book. So many confusing topics need to be figured out by yourself. Not for beginner!
However, some ideas/concepts in the book are very important for a correct implementation of ODS:
bring star-join to ODS,
classification of ODS,
bring Object oriented methodology to ODS
To be objective, the author really invented something new, but he did not need to write a book; a 30-page white paper will do the job perfectly.

Difficult reading for the amount of information

I am a big fan of Ralph Kimball's data warehouse books. I was looking for a similar book for operational data stores, and had hoped this would be it. I was disappointed. There is a good bit of information in this book, but it is not written with the clarity of Kimball's books. The biggest disappointment though is the lack of real examples of ODS data models. I expect examples to be less "definitive" for an ODS than for a DW, nevertheless I desire something more tangible than what is presented in this book.

this book presents some good ideas about ODS, especially the first a few chapters. But the rest of this book is really boring. I even could not finish reading the whole book. The author worry about too much of nothing. Most of the topics are out of date or useless.

Drawing on the Library of Congress's 4.8 million maps and 60,000 atlases, this is an overview of cartography in different times and cultures. Veteran picture editor Virga upends our notion of maps as two-dimensional representations of physical spaces by presenting depictions of imaginative or spiritual territory: a 17th-century map of the soul has five entry points, each corresponding to one of the five senses. And while we're accustomed to maps being oriented north, Islamic and some other cartographers oriented their maps south, as in an eye-opening 1996 Upside Down World Map made in Australia that shows the down under continent approximately where we usually see Greenland. Virga provides historical, sociological and anthropological background to each map. Captions for the plates are so small as to be almost unreadable, making it difficult to follow Virga's interpretations of the maps. Still, this is one of those rare coffee-table books that deserves to be read, that repeatedly delights the eye while informing the mind about the rich variety of humans' attempts to orient themselves in the world. 201 color illus. Cartographia is a treasure that is waiting for map and history lovers of all generations to discover. This beautiful work of art will hold your attention for hours as you look at maps drawn on paper, on wood, on stone, on figurines, and in tapestries. World maps, metaphorical maps, a map depicting a square earth and round heaven, maps on warfare, and the Oregon Trail. From ancient maps to one of the human genome, they're all contained within the pages of this book.

Beautiful and interesting

The most beautiful book on map history that I've seen. The text is learned yet very accessible, and the images well chosen and printed. Virga's attention to the politics of maps repeatedly hits the right note. The production is everything you might expect from the Library of Congress. I own one and have given others as gifts. (Heresy disclosure: I've even cut up a much-worn used copy to make framed maps and handmade stationery.)

Where's the bibliography?

Although this is an attractive coffee table book, the lack of a bibliography is troubling. Vincent Virga does not cite the scholars whose ideas he disseminates. Virga admits in the acknowledgments that he didn't "get" maps or mapmaking when he started the project. Yet, he takes credit for the ideas, as if by hanging out with scholars and librarians at the Library of Congress, he was able to come up with a "new approach" to cartography and to understand the map history of every corner of the globe. This would take a lifetime of study. One of his main sources is the multi-volume encyclopedic History of Cartography published by University of Chicago Press, which introduces and explains many of the same maps. Yet he never cites this important and original work nor refers his readers to it. In fact, he does not cite a single book or article.

More ethical and scrupulous nonfiction authors who write for a popular audience use endnotes and a bibliography or an annotated bibliography to give credit to the scholars and authors whose work they popularize. Virga's "cartobibliography" shows only where he got permission to reprint the images. Without a real bibliography, most readers will never find the scholarly works where Virga got his ideas. It is troubling that the Library of Congress participated in this project on
those terms.

Still the best Bowie biography ever written!

I had already written a review when this book's first edition was published. It is still there on the respective page. But I have to post an updated version here because, in my opinion, the other reviews on this new edition do not do this book justice.

I'm 54 now and have been a Bowie fan for 41 years. I began reading books about Bowie in the 80's. I have read most of the major books written about him. As a long-time fan and an avid reader of Bowie-related books, I assure you: this is the best Bowie biography ever published. The only drawback is that his pre-1969 years are described rather superficiously. But once you get to "Space Oddity", you realize you're reading a worthy tome by a knowledgeable writer. Buckley is a long-time Bowie fan and he got to interview key people in David's career, most of whom were still associated with the singer at the time of writing (unlike other biographies, where only former associates are heard). But unlike some fans you may have met, Buckley has a critical, non-biased view of Bowie's life. While most biographers concentrate on secondary aspects and anecdotes, Buckley hits the nail on the head and takes you right through the spinal cord of David's career. Whether you're a diehard Bowie fan or a newcomer looking for information, this book is for you!

BUYER BEWARE - You will receive the 2005 UK edition, NOT the 2010 International edition when seller matches ISBN!

The ISBN 10 matches with the 2005 UK edition of this book, NOT the 2010 International edition. If you must have the 2010 edition keep looking because this is NOT it. Otherwise, this is the most thorough biography of "Bowie, the musician" that you can find. While I don't agree with everything in it, as they are in some part a matter of opinion, it is very well written and celebrates Bowie's work in a way that most of the other bios about him don't.

Not Perfect but Nice Job

Tackling the subject of Bowie is a tall order and not easily accomplished simply because there is so much to consider. One major failing of most treatments of Bowie's career is the annoying tendency to behave as if he arrived on the scene fully formed when in reality Bowie learned and appropriated lots of stuff from other performers, artists, and producers as he ascended to pop icon status. Buckley's book helps make this point in a way that is respectful and acknowledges Bowie's ability to do extraordinary things with those influences.

The feedback provided by associates Tony Visconti, Carlos Alomar, and Ken Pitt take us through the times when Bowie was a bit green and quite obviously searching for a direction. Some people don't like to see their hero de-constructed like this though it is quite fascinating and instructional. For example some of the new or younger fans might not appreciate how Bowie's voice changed from the screechy Anthony Newly sound to the rich Scott Walker-like baritone he cultivated in time for the Diamond Dogs tour and pretty much kept developing even till now. Or how Tony Defries masterfully manipulated Bowie during his rise to fame. Just reading about the complexities and excesses of the Diamond Dogs tour brings back vivid memories of that time.

So for those of us who were around then this is engaging reading though I could see how someone who first picked up on Bowie during the Let's Dance era might find some of this tedious. However I assure you that it is indeed important to examine if you want to better understand how Bowie got to be who he is.

Biographies of major rock stars seldom please everyone so its always a good idea to balance it out by reading several books or doing your own research. What I enjoy about Buckley's book is it rings true and matches much of what I've learned since I started following Bowie in 1971 when he was still very much a niche artist. Some authors get lazy and rely upon inaccurate sources or worse, just make stuff up hoping no one checks. But Buckley did his homework and does a nice job of distilling an enormous number of details into a meaningful context that should please long time fans and educate new ones.

Once again I purchased a used book, hardcover, and for 30 years old, it appeared new and unread. What a find! Very informative and the illustrations are a collection in themselves. The combination of J E Brown and V L Drysdale are one of a kind and always will be. Aho Mitakuye Oyasin.......

About the Author

Dr. Harold W. Baillie is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Scranton. He has been a visiting professor at a variety of international universities, including the University of Trnava, Slovakia, the State Medical University in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and Capital University of Economics and Business, Beijing, China. Domestically, he has been a visiting professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Ashland University. He is a co-author of the book Health Care Ethics: Principles and Problems, and co-editor, and contributing author, of Is Human Nature Obsolete? Genetics, Bioengineering and the Human Condition, from The MIT Press. He has authored articles on subjects ranging from healthcare ethics to metaphysics and political philosophy, and currently works as a medical ethics consultant with several local health care facilities. He received his A.B. from Yale University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston College.

 

John F. McGeehan, MD, is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). Prior to joining CMSRU, Dr. McGeehan participated in the development of another new medical school, The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA. where, among many roles,  he was course director for The Profession of Medicine in which he taught medical ethics.  He has also been a course director at Temple University School of Medicine, and was Director of Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.

Dr. McGeehan received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital. He created the Ethics Committee at Mercy Hospital in Scranton which he chaired for many years and currently is on the Ethics Committee at Cooper University Hospital where he does ethics consults.

This book was just okay....it seemed very one-sided and didn't cover every topic i wanted to know about.

Awesome book. This was required by my school. I enjoyed the read and it was easy to navigate. I am glad to have this book for a reference.
