About the Author
Yu-kai Chou is an Author and International Keynote Speaker on Gamification. This book is probably the most important and well researched guide to Gamification that is on the market today. If you think Gamification is about gaming stuff them you are dead wrong. It's about how your brain works and is motivated.

I interviewed Yu-kai for the Business Book Talk Podcast and his understanding and depth of knowledge kept me on the edge of my studio seat for over 45 minutes. This is probably one of the best values on Amazon today if you are a business manager, marketing expert or entrepreneur. I can't wait for his next book.

Fantastic manual.

I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

The best money I've spent all year so far

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.

theres one typo error: its actually 1kg= 2.2 pounds***

this book is still VERY HELPFUL!!!! id give it 4 stars if it wasent for the typo lol.
i took my test in august 13'.
i used this book for my hesi exam which only had the reading,grammar,vocabulary,and math sections.
i used this website: testprepreview.com
*****i passed my math section with a 100 and my english composite score was also a 100. for the vocab section on the test, there may be words not listed in the book,but u can eliminate some obvious wrong answers.
****for the reading section on the test, the questions are straight forward!
!!!! theres no real way of studying for reading comprehension, i just basically memorized the hesi hints in that study section. memorize your terms for grammar,know ALL the VOCAB listed in the book,the math section had ALOT of subtracting,adding,multiplying and dividing of FRACTIONS,know your percents,KnOW MILITARY TIME. and again KNOW UR FRACTIONS!!! if u dont know how to work on them once,then u wont know how to do them 20 times !!!!math part was very heavy on fractions!!!
also,KNOW ur CONVERSIONS! practice how to convert using test prep website with practice questions in the book.
how i studied:
i made index cards for the hesi hints in reading comprehension, for all vocab terms, for grammar terms and tips, and for math i practiced all the problems OVER AND OVER again. make sure u practice everyday and constantly test urself using each chapter test and APPENDIX TESTS. practice makes perfect!

I just took my HESI admission exam (omg I was dying from stress)! I used this book as a study guide and I passed my HESI test with flying colors. The math and language section are good study tools just on its own. The science sections, you should use it as a skeleton of what you should study. Dive into your past biology/chemistry text books and read up on the subjects they mention in here. The test doesn't seem to go too much in depth and focuses more on the broad subjects. But, every test is different so it might be different for you.

Please don't listen to what anyone says. This book is everything that you need to score 90% and above average on HESI. I just scored 92% and some questions and reading passages were EXACTLY the same from this book. Just make flash cards for the vocab words, grammar terms, and some hard to understand anatomy and do all the practice questions. YOU WILL BE FINE.

Very useful when studying mycology, especially in a lab setting. Great for reference when identifying fungi on a plate. Features drawings and actual images of most fungi. Very descriptive cornmeal morphologies, and accurate descriptions of front and reverse color.

A propagandist will use the shock treatment to catch his or her audience's attention. The propagandist will make a rather outrageous, exaggerated or shocking statement as an attention getter. I've listed a few examples of hypothetical shocking statements that might be made by partisans of some selected issues:

An Environmentalist: "The human race might not see the turn of the next century."

An Educational Reformer: "America's public schools are pretty good - for a third world nation!"

A Dietitian: "You may be killing your children."

An Opponent of Anti-ballistic missile systems: We're more likely to die from a terrorist bombing than from a missile launched from a rogue nation."

A Sociologist with a Bias Against Extreme Social Stratification:

"Karl Marx might have been right. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer."

A Scientist Concerned About Global Warming: "Pretty soon we'll have to visit our coastal cities from a sight seeing submarine."

An Ultra-feminist: "Who are the most dangerous people in the world? They're fairly easy to spot for they usually wear pants!"

A Doctor Pitted against Health Insurance Companies: "Could we win a war if our generals had to get permission to go ahead with each planned battlefield maneuver? Well doctors are facing similar circumstances today!"

One outstanding example of the shock 'em technique was provided by the antics of the evangelist Aimee Semple Mc Pherson. In the late 1920s, her illustrated sermons became famous. After receiving a traffic ticket for speeding she had an idea for a sermon. One day she called out to her congregation, "Stop! You're under arrest!" Sister Aimee, as she was called, appeared on her temple platform in a police uniform standing by a motorcycle with the sound of police siren's echoing throughout the Temple. She challenged her people to stop before they sped into hell. *

THE SHOTGUN APPROACH

With this technique the propagandist throws at the audience every supporting idea for his or her cause that can be thought up. The hope is that at least some of the ideas will be accepted. The more varied and heterogeneous the audience is, the better the chances to get ideas across. If the propagandist is scared to base his or her case on just one main point, this approach is a wise one.

EMPHASIZE ONE POINT

With this technique the propagandist selects what he or she feels is the strongest argument supporting the position being taken on a subject. All other supporting arguments are excluded. It can be risky because if the opponent shoots down the propagandist's main idea the contest is over.

Abraham Lincoln debated using this approach. He was seriously opposed to slavery and in his speeches he hammered away at the problem relentlessly. The slave holding states didn't like him one bit but the free states certainly did and elected him to the presidency.

About the Author
Henry T. Conserva has taught in public secondary schools in the San Francisco Bay Area of California for over fifty years. In his position as a debating coach, he was involved in developing critical thinking skills among his students. He thought knowledge of propaganda techniques was essential in arming his students against the many questionable arguments they often faced in their debates. He noted that many of the students became skeptical consumers as they saw through many of the advertising appeals that were aimed at them on a daily basis. His hope has always been that all students would benefit from knowing at least some of the ways used by those who wish to brainwash them.

there are better books on the subject

This is very basic and simplistic text. It could be useful, but there are much better books on the subject. This one seems rather disorganized and poorly explained. I would agree with one reviewer that this looks like a Word document turned into a book. I would add that the whole project looks like a rush job without much planning and thought. As the other reviewer I would also recommend an excellent book by Pratkanis and Aronson The Age of Propaganda. Similar price, but much better and much more sophisticated. Further, if one is interested in logical fallacies, there is this old classic by Nicholas Capaldi The Art of Deception. Finally, you could consider "Politics and Propaganda: Weapons of Mass Seduction" (this one is a bit more difficult).

Informative, but designed for high school

I have been interested in propaganda and persuasion for some time now, so when I learned about this book I was very excited. The text itself is a brief overview of 88 or so propaganda techniques. Each is described in about 3 lines, and include an example. The explanations are clear, but not in depth. The work is suitable for someone seeking an encyclopedia-style knowledge.

The formatting appears to be a Word Document that has been put straight to press, untouched.

All in all, if you're looking for a succinct crash course, this may work. If you're truly looking for information, look to Age of Propaganda.

Very well written

I don't like to read informational books especially professional text books. Usually the writers of the books fail to remember that those of us reading them are at the beginning level of the profession which makes them hard to read. This book however is easy to read, formatted, organized, and written well and has a lot of useful information for those going into a health profession management position.

A high-quality Clif's Notes of ex-phys

This is like a high-quality Clif's Notes of ex-phys topics. This book would be great for someone with passing interest across ex-phys, who doesn't want too many details in too much depth. For deeper interest McArdle and Katch's is a better place to start. For people more interested in application-specific aspects of ex-phys, NSCA's CSCS book is probably best. If you're looking for esoteric ex-phys training applications get Siff and Verkhoshanskys Supertraining.

Excellent in depth look at many S&C priciples

I have really enjoyed this text and have gone back to it numerous times. All claims made by authors are very well referenced which it a huge plus.

As the book states this is a look at biological principles of S&C and it also touches on practical applications as well (rather biased toward the principles though)This is not a book to grab if you are looking for a new workout, but if you want cutting edge information on how the human responds to exercise in order to enhance your learning and/or coaching this is an excellent text. I highly recommend it.

Honestly, has waaaaay more biological principles than practical applications. Very understandable book, however, Id only recomend if you have taken a few coures in human biology, anatomy, and physiology.
