Harvey Karp, M.D., is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the USC School of Medicine. Skip the book, watch a video

First off, I completely believe that the techniques in here are going to be a lifesaver. Every nurse, pediatrician, or midwife I've talked to has recommended these techniques. However, putting them into a book is really stretching the material, and involves a LOT of repetition of the same stories and arguments over and over. This could be condensed into a pamphlet. In fact, I just finished watching Dr. Karp explain the entire book in a six-minute spot on a daytime TV show (found for free on the Internet).

As an expectant parent who wants to be well informed, I have a lot of books on my reading list. This took up way more time than it should have. If you're a new/expecting parent, do yourself a favor and find this info for free on the Internet. If you want to buy this as a gift, do the expectant parents a favor and get the DVD or instant video instead.

I suggest just googling the 5 S's, a LOT of this book is spend babbling on and on justifying their ideas, when you have a screaming baby - you just want them to get to the point! Too much fluff for me, but was good information all in all.

This book was recommended by our pediatrician and many of the tips have worked great for our baby. she will not sleep swaddled but if she is ever very fussy we will swaddle her up. Twe use the other 4 S's basically every time we put her to sleep! The hair dryer on high is our best friend!

Excellent information, but small format makes it difficult to see drawn images and read.

This is a great book to keep as a reference for recreational or survival camping. This book is PACKED with information and survival camping tips. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons: 1. This is a smaller format book, 5.3 x 8.3 inches, by 1.5 thick. The format is so small, it's VERY difficult at times to clearly see the small hand-drawn images and read the small text, that's in a handwriting font, that's with the pictures. 2. Because of the small format, the binding fell apart within a few days of receiving this book. There's a larger format version of this book available that's 8.5 x 11 x 1. I would recommend the larger format of this book. I also have the larger format, and the larger format book is definitely a 5 star book that any camper or prepper should own.

Exceeded expectations

I gave this book as a gift to an avid camper. Wasn't sure how it would be received but she started reading it immediately and we went camping the next week. My friend the camper actively used some of the suggestions that week. It really came in handy. The book is great for people who think that there is nothing left to learn or who just like to test methods to see if something works. You too can be a Mr. know it all Rocky! Not as much on catching fish as I had hoped.

This is one of the most complete outdoor/survival guides I have ever read. This book covers everything from fire making, ice and mountain climbing, radio signals, wildlife around the global and even pioneer weather indicators. I truly recommend this book as most have for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

a modest proposal

eyemagine -- i.e., imagine in your mind's keen eye -- an alternative edition presenting: (1) all of the beautiful photos; (2) a modestly expanded introduction, succinctly headlining each photo; and (3) nary a word of the as-is text (that occupies c half of the present volume). the production cost of this alternative book would be very significantly reduced, allowing for a commensurate reduction in price. aobtw, significantly fewer trees would need to be felled. ¶ in short: the text as is adds very little to this splendid collection of photos.

Astonishing+

When I bought Pakenham's precursor to this book ("Meetings With Remarkable Trees"), I was astonished then. Now I've run out of superlatives, hence the plus sign suffixing the title of my review. As enjoyable as his poetic writing style is, that's just a bonus. The highly detailed photos in this book are, well, astonishing+. He uses a heavy, large-format camera, lugging it all around the world to photograph some of the most amazing trees on the planet. And as fine as the print quality was in "Meeting With Remarkable Trees", the print quality of this book surpasses the former. I am constantly amazed at the print quality of the best books being printed today, and this is right up there at the top of the heap. You'll swear you're looking at fine, lithographic prints. I am a fanatic tree lover to begin with, and this book is just glorious, and satisfies my wildest dreams for such a book. It gives me a sense of ecstasy over being alive.

Stunning! Makes you want to daydream under a tree, and pack your bags!

It was just a couple of weeks ago that I went back to visit some of the wisest friends I know, the 4500+ year old Bristlecone Pine trees in California. I had met them a few years earlier, they had comforted me after a death in my immediate family by giving me some perspective. A short while later, I quit my job to travel the world for a couple of years. On that go round, I also visited a grove of tall trees in Redwood National Park - which had some former world record holders. I thought I had seen it all. The oldest, tallest, and in 1997, I had visited General Sherman - the largest (In volume). All of these are noted in the book with glorious photos.

Boy, was I wrong. I recently discovered another tree of distinction, also while in California. A moreton bay fig tree with a crown of 100+ feet, 75 feet tall. Magnificent. I've started to look at registers of trees, and then I found this book.

I've begun to realize there are so many more trees of distinction, and not just the ones he mentions. The author has helped open up my eyes to seeing the world in another different way. His prose, descriptions, and inclusion of historical photos makes for an enjoyable read. I like to repeat - "The true voyage of discovery, is not in going to new places, but in seeing with new eyes." - Proust. The author has succeeded in having that effect on me.

He finds glorious trees in Botswana, Madagascar, Morocco, South Africa / Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey / France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden / Canada, USA, Mexico / Australia, and New Zealand.

I've had the fortune of visiting 10 of these countries in my life, but other than what I noted earlier, didn't particularly make an effort to seek other trees out. I will now. My list of reasons to travel and re-visit some places is growing. Thank you Mr.Pakenham.

I'm back in the Northwest US now - home of many trees, as I drive or bicycle I pay much closer attention to the friendly giants all around. I'm sure I'll lie down under one of them soon and have that daydream.

Was "average-ly" good.

A lot of the content in this book especially towards the end are redundant to the content that is introduced in the beginning. The concepts are repeated, and it seems as if the author has a strong bias towards baseball as the sport of example, followed by football and soccer, when there are many other sports out there. Most of the views on "parents of athletes" are one-sided from the coach's perspective, without taking into consideration as to why athlete's parents behave the way they do at practices or games given their different backgrounds. Overall, this book was a good read for simple young athlete coaching concepts.

Yevgen Barsukov is an IP development manager for battery management systems business units at Texas Instruments. He holds an M.S. in organic chemistry from Kiev National University in the Ukraine and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Kiel Christian Albrecht University in Germany.

Jinrong Qian is a sector manager and distinguished member of technical staff for battery management systems at Texas Instruments. He holds M.S. degrees in power electronics from both the University of Central Florida and Zhejiang University in China and earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

DETAILED BATTERY POWER MANAGEMENT RESOURCE!!!

Are you an engineer or a curious do-it-yourself enthusiast? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Yevgen Barsukov and Jinrong Qian, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that aims to make it clear that batteries and battery management electronics that are used, should be able to operate in the most efficient and safest way.

Authors Barsukova and Qian, begin by summarizing the best handling practices based on a particular chemistry for the most common rechargeable battery types in order to ensure the best longevity of the battery; as well as, adequate safety of the device. Next, the authors discuss battery charging algorithms, battery charging system topologies, design considerations, the main battery charger applications, and the popular battery charger ICs.
Then, they show you how to accomplish a remodeling of battery designers’ thinking; and, offer a practical solution to all of the challenges that arise from highly energetic mobile power sources. In addition, the authors discuss why when multiple cells are connected in series, the cell voltage is not always equal to the pack voltage divided by the number of cells. They continue by describing battery fuel gauging, which is the expression that everyone is using to describe what this little chip inside the battery is doing. The authors then briefly analyze the system-level ESD, EMI minimization, and specific design considerations for each piece of the end equipment. Finally, the authors apply the principles of the different ingredients of a successful battery-operated system to specific portable systems to demonstrate them in action; and, to provide you with an actionable reference template that you can use as a starting point for your own development efforts for such systems or expand to other systems with similar properties.

This most excellent book covers rechargeable battery fundamentals, explaining how any battery operates and describing the common factors to consider when choosing a battery. Furthermore, this great book explains the how and why of battery management systems; and, provides would-be designers of battery management systems and chargers with enough information to be successful. Finally, the book combines all of the various pieces of knowledge about battery management, and provides examples of complete battery-operated systems that can be cut-and-pasted into your designs.

Good first text but falls short on details

This is an excellent text to get to know the overall landscape of batteries and power management. I would not recommend paying full price though. The state of the art (almost) is described in reasonable detail. The text falls short in several areas - battery chemistry and how batteries work is treated almost as if the reader were already familiar with the topic. For example the figures on cathodes and anodes and the nomenclature is not clear at all. The use of black and white images of poor resolution makes it hard to use it as a fundamental text. Surely there are excellent images and animations available in color to describe the charging and discharging process in li-ion batteries. Fortunately several university lectures are available to fill in this gap. Another grouse of mine is that while the text claims to discuss fuel gauging algorithms, the finer details which are in some sense public domain by way of patents is treated cautiously. Given the authors are employees of a company, this is understandable from a trade secret point of view but as a text to enthuse the reader the text disappoints. In this regard, some of the app notes from TI or other companies are a better read and free of cost. References to literature are minimal and reader may have to dig into patent documents to really understand how battery gauging works in practice. A final point is the lack of exercises that would make for using this text in a classroom setting. At 50% of full price it was a great buy. I wish the authors take note of the shortcomings and come out with a color print 2nd edition.

Exceptional battery management book

I use this book both for advanced technical training, as well as training people who are new to the battery power management industry. It has a very comprehensive approach and covers topics ranging from battery chemistry fundamentals, battery safety, system considerations, to design examples. I have bought a few extra copies to share with colleagues.
