Two of America's leading psychologists, Jeffrey E. Young, Ph.D., and Janet S. Klosko, Ph.D., show readers how to free themselves from negative life patterns. Written with compassion as well as clinical insight, this thought-provoking book guides readers through the process of identifying "life traps." For example, "Do you put the needs of others before your own? Are you drawn into relationships with people who are self-centered, cold to you, misunderstand you, or use you? Do you feel inadequate compared to people around you?" Followed by an engaging discussion that makes use of case studies, this book can help people change their lives by stopping the cycle of self-destruction.

From Publishers Weekly
Several of the most painful petards upon which people become hoisted during an unhappy childhood are neatly dispatched here by two cognitive therapists, who attack 11 common "lifetraps"--destructive patterns that underlie a variety of emotional problems. Young, director of New York City's Cognitive Therapy Center and a faculty member of the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, and Klosko, co-director of the Cognitive Therapy Center of Long Island, ably demonstrate how to deal with issues of abandonment, dependence, trust, social rejection, emotional deprivation, failure and vulnerability. They provide meaningful case histories, perceptive descriptions, diagnostic tests and a variety of nugget-sized, easily understood lists detailing the causes, danger signs and effects of negative impulses and actions, as well as ways to short-circuit them.

From Library Journal
The authors, both cognitive psychotherapists, identify 11 common "lifetraps," which they define as repetitive, destructive behavior patterns associated with a negative self-image. Using illustrations from case studies, the authors describe each lifetrap, discuss its origins in childhood experience, and provide a questionnaire for self-assesment. They then offer a program for change using techniques ranging from experiential (getting in touch with your inner child) to cognitive (writing a "case" against your lifetrap) and behavioral (identifying specific behaviors to be changed). Recommended for popular psychology collections.

I have never said this before about any book, but this one is a life changer for me!
By GatesofDawn67
I have been suicidally depressed since I was five years old. I have spent 40 years in therapy and I am on a cocktail of meds. I have had ECT treatments with varying success. I was ready to give up on therapy and possible get a cigulatomy. Then I found this book. It all seems familiar. There is nothing radical in it, but seeing things presented as lifetraps (schemas) allowed me to see myself in a new way. I recognized myself in the subjugation lifetrap. As difficult as it was I started to assert myself, to ask for help and be honest with myself about my own passive-aggressiveness and my depression started lifting! As soon as I was manipulated into doing something I didn't want to do, I could feel the depression returning. I later told that person I would not be able to help after all and the depression lifted. It was the classic case depression being anger turned inwards. Its just that I turn it inward so fast that I never knew that it was anger. I am looking forward to finding myself in some of the other lifetraps.

An Outstanding Self-help Resource
By Sunny SD
This is brilliant work. It is easy to read, there are interesting examples of all nine schema (the filters you see your life through) and the "how to" chapter offers the diligent a way to work through behaviors that no longer serve you. The reader must make the commitment to complete the exercises and be willing to get assistance when the going gets tough, but the tools are here to help you understand and accept yourself and make healthy choices.

I have shared the book with numerous friends and family members. The feedback has been positive and what people tell me again and again is that the book gave them hope...hope of conquering behaviors that interfered with relationships, career advancement, handling money prudently. It is very powerful, so if you want to feel better about yourself and you've been wondering how to make that happen, give this book a try. I am confident you will feel you got your money's worth.

Great book for reinventing your life
By A.map
As author of a book on spirituality, "Oracle of the Generous Heart," I've often been asked questions about how to begin evolving spiritually by people struggling in emotionally trying situations. Oftentimes, we seek spiritual answers when our lives are mired in convoluted circumstances that make us feel hopeless, without any understanding of how it got that way. Prayer yields us everything, yet it is understanding that opens the doors. Self recognition and understanding empowers us with tools for creating a life we want to live.

The great truths of the universe are no farther away from us than in the everyday moments of our life. What we intend, think, say and do are the fundamental building blocks of what we end up creating in our life. Evolving spiritually is based in self understanding and reflection, and knowing who we are being.

Reading all of the spirituality and/or self help books in the world won't move us forward on that journey unless we are willing to take a long, hard look at ourselves. We must be willing to look into the mirror that is the life we are living, and who we are being before we can evolve spiritually and emotionally. Spiritual growth and enlightenment travel hand in hand with gaining self recognition and understanding. Much of life is about recipes, and how we put ingredients together. There are a lot of books that give ingredient lists and recipes.

I spent time researching self help books that are complimentary to the kind of spiritual journey of creating your life that is in Oracle. I looked through the psychological self help book genre on Amazon, and delved into all of the books that looked promising. My goal was finding a resource that I could recommend for questions about how take positive steps towards greater self understanding in a way that is complimentary to a journey of spiritual evolution.

I ordered a number of books after reading through the write-ups and reviews. Interestingly, this book had originally caught my eye for a scathing review that the author had taken the time to respond to, engaging the reviewer in a positive conversation.

After a lot of reading, this is the only book that I can recommend for ALL of these reasons:

1. Easy to read but well written
2. Easy to understand, with no pop psychology buzz words and catch phrases
3. Complimentary to a spiritual path of evolution and self-discovery
4. Helpful for defining your world, and understanding who you are being in your life
5. Figuring out what you want to create in your life, and what you don't want in your life by defining your behaviors and circumstances
6. Learning to develop behaviors and thinking that help create positive circumstances
7. Credentials of the primary author (plus, they don't try to sell you anything like workshops, courses and cd's as a tie in with the book!)

"Reinventing Your Life," is an excellent book, and I recommend it for anyone who would like to start the process of understanding and defining their life, and their world as part of their spiritual journey.
